The delicate harmonic beauty of this piece is truly stunning. Though short in length, there is immense opportunity for magical expressive moments. With close harmonies weaving in and out of consonances and unisons and flowing passages paired with moments of rhythmic energy, there is so much music to be made. A repeating ending of layered melodies that gradually fades al niente will have your audience holding their breath. « AMITIÉ » is a composition of about six minutes long for a women's choir (SSAA). It can also be performed by a male choir (TTBB), in this case the singers must read in octabassa treble clef. This piece sets to music a selection of poems based on friendship, taken from the collection Le Bestiaire ou Cortège d´Orphée by Guillaume Apollinaire. We will hear The cat, The peacock, The owl and The ox.

 The bond of friendship is symbolized here by an element of percussion: the friction of a metal chain, played by the members of the choir from the beginning to the end of the piece. This implies that the choir must use a stand or sing in pairs, one holding the sheet music and the other playing the string.

                                                                 

This work explores different vocal techniques: singing, sliding, timbre play, murmuring, rhythmic speaking, declaiming and shouting. These different modes of vocal play are combined with different compositional techniques such as polyrhythm, homorhythmia, rhythmic irregularity, counterpoint, opposition and layering of sound planes.

 

FRIENDSHIP is the second part of a cycle devoted to the work of Apollinaire.

This co-lead single from Beyonce's album Cowboy Carter heralded that extended exploration of her roots in Country music with a catchy toe-tapper that appealed to mainstream audiences while remaining true to the Country genre. It was the first single by a Black woman to reach number 1 in the Country charts.

As with the original song, the complexities in the arrangement are textural and rhythmic rather than harmonic. The lines themselves are all relatively simple, but you need to stay alert to coordinate them effectively. Sparkling interchange between the parts creates a playful atmosphere for audiences as well as plentiful opportunities for the singers to have fun.

This arrangement is notated on four staves, using treble and bass alta (sounding one octave higher than written) clefs.

PERFORMANCE NOTES FROM THE COMPOSER:

I AM is a singing meditation. It is both a piece that honors the individual and the whole. It is meant to affirm an individual's worth, as well as the whole collective. When a choir prepares for a performance, they rehearse a piece dozens if not hundreds of times. I wanted the experience of rehearsing I AM to be an ongoing declaration of the singer’s value. Therefore, every phrase in this piece is an affirmation. When a singer finds themselves singing the piece outside of rehearsal, they will be singing words that are positive and affirming. I cannot express how much joy that brings me as a composer.

Musically, I AM is both complex, with its 7-part vocal split, contrasting rhythms, and varying accents, yet simple in its repetition, lyrics, and tonality. Each of the 7 parts sings a unique affirmation throughout the piece. They are simple statements like, I am enough and I am love, but can hold so much complexity depending on an individual's relationship with the statement. In the middle of the piece, there is an aleatoric section where each singer contributes their unique affirming statement. It creates a chaotic building of sound before coming together for the first and only time in the piece to sing I AM as a whole choir in block chords.  It is one of my favorite moments in the piece because simple and complex are just a beat apart.

I AM was commissioned by the Grand Rapids Women's Chorus and premiered on May 10, 2024.
