Composed by Robert Debbaut. Contemporary. Octavo. 31 pages. ROBERT DEBBAUT #6342191. Published by ROBERT DEBBAUT (A0.939403).

American lyric poet Sara Trevor Teasdale (1884-1933) was the first woman and the first poet to win the Pulitzer Prize for Literature. She won the 1918 Pulitzer Prize for her 1917 collection entitled Love Songs. Teasdale was roundly praised for her lyric mastery and romantic subjects. Her poems most often take on the first person role of their female narrators and protagonists.

Teasdale’s first poem was published in 1907. Later that year she published her first collection of poems, Sonnets to Duse and Other Poems, written mainly for the Italian actress Eleonora Duse. In 1911 her second collection Helen of Troy and Other Poems received high praise from critics. Her third collection, Rivers to the Sea from 1915 was and remains a best seller and has been reprinted several times. The three poems used here, Joy, The Answer, and .To Joy all date from 1915. These three poems were also included in her Pulitzer Prize-winning collection Love Songs.

Teasdale was born in St. Louis, Missouri on August 8, 1884. She was a sickly child, so much so that she was home schooled. As a young woman she had many suitors, including the poet Vachel Lindsay, who thought he could never provide for her. She eventually married businessman Ernst Filsinger, a great admirer of her poems. The couple relocated to New York City.

Filsinger’s constant business travel left Teasdale very lonely and depressed. She eventually relocated to another state so she could quickly divorce him. Filsinger was shocked. Teasdale took up again with Vachel Lindsay, who has himself married and had children. Lindsay committed suicide in 1931 and Teasdale followed likewise two years later. She is interred at Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis.

Poem by Sara Teasdale
for SSAA chorus + piano
Commissioned by the
American Choral Directors Association as part of The New Canon Project.

From the composer:

Inspired by her travels, Vignettes Overseas is a collection of poems published in Sara Teasdale's massively successful book of poems, Rivers to the Sea. Written during a time where women's voices were often silenced, and just one year after her marriage, Night Song at Amalfi vibrantly illustrates the stuggle to be a woman in a society that expected women to be submissive, and the stark reality that she and
many other women faced.

While women's rights have made great strides over the years, women and other minority groups still stuggle to have their voices heard. This song is for all of them.
This piece was commissioned by the New Canon Project, a partnership between the American Choral Directors Association, the American String Teachers Association, and Rising Tide Music Press, with support of the Sphinx Venture Fund. This piece is written for school-aged groups, but is accessible to choirs of all levels and challenges the choir with part independence and modal writing. This piece starts out very open and celestial, then turns dark as the reality of unending silence sets
in. There is hope, but also anger, confusion, and numbness.

The opening lines, “Listen, I love you. Do not turn your face / Nor touch me.”, reflect the somber feelings encompassing Sara Teasdale’s poem. Paired voices initially express contrapuntal melodic lines enhanced by underlying harmony and slow syncopation in the piano accompaniment. The middle and final sections, imbued with sad words such as “let me ease my heart,” “with broken wing” and “Forget that I am speaking,” evolve beautifully within contrasting tonal regions, supported by undulating keyboard arpeggios. One of a set of six of Teasdale's love songs. Duration: 2:00.

Sara Teasdale’s poem, The Mystery, depicts deep lasting love - “Your eyes drink of me” and “We have long been lovers”. It also raises a question - “Can I ever know you / Or you know me?” Stephen Chatman’s expressive setting begins with a unison melody, supported by modulating harmonies in the piano accompaniment, and evolves toward four-part voices.  The middle section, featuring rising vocal lines in imitative counterpoint, precedes a return to the initial melody. One of a set of six of Teasdale's love songs. Duration: 2:30.

The opening line of Sara Teasdale’s poem, After Love, “There is no magic any more,” establishes the theme of vanishing love. Stephen Chatman’s setting of the poignant text, in the key of E flat major, emphasizes the natural rhythm of the words, mixed meters, and irregular phrase lengths. The climax of the melody embraces sustained, intense vocal lines in contrary motion supported by an undulating piano accompaniment. One of a set of six of Teasdale's love songs. Duration: 1:45.

Stephen Chatman’s setting of Sara Teasdale’s whimsical poem pertaining to a brown-thrush, April, love and kisses, emulates the meaning, strict rhythm, rhyme and strophic structure of the text. The soft rolled chords of the harp-like piano accompaniment highlight the lilting 6/8-meter, folk-like melody, and consistent homophonic choral texture. The repetitive lines, “Love me, love me, love me!”, and “kiss me, kiss me, kiss me!”, inspire the musical refrains. One of a set of six of Teasdale's love songs. Duration: 1:45.

SKU: MQ.1.3451-E

Composed by Michael John Trotta. Advanced/Collegiate. Secular, 21st century. Instrument part. 19 pages. Duration 3 minutes, 49 seconds. Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital #1.3451-E. Published by Galaxy Music Corporation - Digital (MQ.1.3451-E).

English.

American poet Sara Teasdale (1884-1933) won the Pulitzer Prize for her 1917 collection of poems titled Love Songs. The text for this song is taken from “Barter,” the first in this set of poems. Despite the poet's history of poor emotional and physical health, the text captures a hopeful attitude that foreshadows the spirit of optimism that was the precursor to the Roaring Twenties.
A rhythmic piano part is the foundation for a captivatingly lyric melody that gently unfolds throughout the piece. The setting begins with the simplicity of a unison vocal line that gradually expands as the piece explores the complexities of the wonder of everyday life. Subtle text painting captures the poet's desire to seek refuge in the beauty that surrounded her. Duration: 3:49
Optional Oboe part included.
