This is an impressive spiritual setting for the concert, contest or festival choir!  Featuring syncopated rhythmic figures in the lower voices juxtaposed against the timeless melody presented by a soloist or soloists. This a cappella arrangement unfolds, all solidly supported by an optional rhythmic djembe accompaniment.  As the excitement builds, a vocal pyramid launches the choir and soloist(s) into a fortissimo ending and a final flourish. One for the upper voices, this traditional spiritual has been given a bit of a makeover with snatches of other Christmas carols.  Despite being SSAA (and SSSSAAAA in the last bar!) this is well within the range and difficulty level of a reasonably competent choir.  Just make sure the tune(s) are prominent and don't rush the last bar.  (Could be transposed down for the men.)  Ideal for a Christmas concert or Lessons & Carols.

A flexible a cappella arrangement of this uplifting spiritual / Appalachian hymn for female voices.
Also known as Down to the River to Pray and Down in the Valley to Pray, the song became popular after a recording by Alison Krauss was used in the film O Brother, Where Art Thou? 
This score begins with one vocal line and builds up to 4 parts as the song progresses.
You could start with solos or small groups and add voices or start in unison and gradually divide into parts. For SSA ensembles you could treat the final part to enter as a descant with a small group of voices.
