Words and Music by Neil Sedaka in 1972. Arranged in 2022 by Boo de Bruin. 11 pages for Sweet Adelines (ladies' barbershop) chorus. (Tenor, lead, baritone, bass are roughly equivalent to SSAA, although lead and baritone have similar ranges, but perform different functions). That's when the music takes me is taken from Neil Sedaka's Solitaire LP. The song was notable as it was one of the only songs for which Sedaka wrote the lyrics in addition to the music. He often finishes his song using the song. (The ending of the arrangement is inspired by how he performs the song live, rather than the recording edit). It reached #18 on the UK singles chart, #27 on the US Billboard Hot 100, and #7 on the US Billboard Easy Listening chart. This arrangement was written for a barbershop chorus, and as such the lowest voice part has a lower range than is custom for choral SSAA writing. The melody sits with the lead for the vast majority of the song, but with the bass part taking a few of the lowest notes. Please note: in keeping with normal barbershop practice the men's barbershop voicing names are used (tenor, lead, baritone and bass) and an octave-shifted bass clef is used for the baritone and bass parts. Vocal ranges are: Tenor: D4 - G5 (D above middle C to G above high C) Lead: B3 - D5 (B below middle C to D above high C) Baritone: G3 - C5 (G below middle C to D above high C) Bass: D3 - D4 (D below middle C to D above middle C).

From Justin Timberlake's album Justified, this song makes an obvious reference to the 1950s ballad of the same title. Whilst it contains a similar emotional theme, the narrative that unfolds is quite different, as are the musical gestures of popular music 50 years on from the older song. The arrangement borrows a lot of the motifs from Timberlake's recording and weaves them into a texture that develops in complexity until the very end where it dissolves back into nothing.

From Shania Twain's 1997 album Come on Over, this song is a reminder that such an inviting title does not mean the singer has abandoned her critical faculties. There has rarely been such a clear statement of womankind's general indifference to the things men use to jostle for status with each other.

The arrangement contrasts stark sections that are mostly in two parts (occasionally blossoming out into more for effect) with sections in full four-part harmony. The splitting and joining of parts makes me think of it as more suitable for an ensemble with multiple voices per part than a quartet.

The arrangement is notated in the traditional clefs for women's barbershop: treble and bass alta (i.e. sung an octave higher than written).

This is a song that, paradoxically, feels both evocative of a particular historical moment and timeless. In it's first guise, as sung by Lesley Gore in 1963, it is a harbinger of both the sexual revolution and Second Wave feminism. Three decades later, as the closing sequence to the movie The First Wives Club, it is full of  confidence and joie de vivre, but by 2016, when released by Grace, it has turned darker, as G-Eazy's rap dramatises the controlling man the song addresses.

This arrangement positions the song as a statement of strength and defiance, and re-appropriates material from the rap to craft an original bridge.

Written just before the First World War, this flirtatious song anticipates that world where women were finding a new independence and power, and trying to work out what to do with it. On the one hand, the singer doesn’t want to be unfeminine by making the first move, on the other, she’s going to make a bid for what she wants. Go girl, is what I say.

This arrangement is suitable for performance in a barbershop contest, and the Southern Comfort Barber Gals won a bronze medal in the Holland Harmony 2009 chorus contest with this it. This song from a largely-forgotten 1940 movie is generally associated in British minds with the child star Lena Zavaroni, who had a hit with it when she was far too young to be worried about boys wanting to marry her.
