Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is an American nineteenth century spiritual. This version is arranged as a duet for one Clarinet and one Viola. The words and music of Swing Low, Sweet Chariot are credited to Wallis Willis, a Native American freedman from Oklahoma. A local minister transcribed the song in 1865 and within a few years it became a firm gospel favourite. In recent times Swing Low, Sweet Chariot has been adopted by the Civil Rights movement on one hand, and the England rugby team on the other. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot is simply arranged in keys and range best suited to the instruments. The hymn is played three and a half times, once as a ballad, then twice in a slow rock style, before returning to the ballad at the end. Tango first appeared as in the late nineteenth century in Buenos Aires, Argentina, but it wasn’t long before the dance craze spread to North America and Europe. Performers like Carlos Gardel were the international superstars of their day. More recently the Nuevo Tango of Astor Piazzolla and others has pushed the boundaries and ensured that Tango is still a vibrant art form today. If you play to an intermediate standard and upwards, then you and your audience will enjoy this piece. Rhythms should be lightly articulated with the first beat in the bar always strong; the melody should always flow and following the articulation in the score will help convey the style.
