Bassoon Solo - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.998809 Composed by Robert A. Howard. 21st Century,Contemporary,Standards. Individual part. 2 pages. Robert A. Howard #6072425. Published by Robert A. Howard (A0.998809). This short solo bassoon piece takes its name from the classic surrealist painting by the Belgian artist Rene Magritte (1937). A person, facing away from the observer, looks into a mirror. The reflected image (in the mirror) is not the person's face, as we would expect. Instead, we see a duplication of their back. This person remains faceless. Other minor objects are, however, correctly reflected in the mirror, in order to heighten the 'illusion'. A solo bassoon represents the lonely, solitary and isolated character of the painting. Musical mirror images inform many aspects of the piece, from the overall structure, to the sequence of specific pitches. In keeping with the theme of the artwork, symmetries are suggested, only to be contradicted. The piece remains accessible for the listener and is appropriate for most standards of bassoonist, including students and professional players.
