PRODUCT DESCRIPTION:

In the last few years leading up to 2020, social division and dissent has risen across the world. This social division has been compounded by extreme social and physical isolation during the COVID-19 crisis. In light of these developments, I felt that this piece’s message was needed now in 2020 more than ever.

The tune Prospect is by far one of the most beautiful American melodies from the 1800s. The text was inspired by the beauty of human connection and the feelings we experience when parting ways: sadness and happy remembrance. The text attempts to invoke healing as we keep everyone we hold dear etched on our hearts. This arrangement is an accessible, early intermediate arrangement for SAB chorus.       - Christopher Durigg.

A new arrangement of a traditional spiritual. The character of this version is shaped by the lyrics, “I’m gonna shout and sing, until the heavens ring...†For this is a song of celebration. The Gospel Ship (i.e. a vessel of music) transports the singers above earthly troubles, on up to heaven.

Music has the power to overcome daily challenges. The burden is lightened, and the weary road is shortened. Thus, the climax of this work comes with the lyrics, “your journey won’t be long if you live a life of song.†Indeed, with voices joined together, we shall go “sailing through the air!†Duration: 4:00

Choral score and children's chorus part included.

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Hans Rudolf. 19th Century,Christian,Historic,Praise & Worship,Religious. Octavo. 19 pages. Hans Rudolf #798998. Published by Hans Rudolf (A0.1200196).

A Poor Wayfaring Stranger is a traditional American folk song with roots that can be traced back to the early 19th century. The song tells the story of a weary traveler who is journeying through a difficult world in search of a brighter future in the afterlife. The song's haunting melody and poignant lyrics have made it a favorite of singers and audiences alike, and it has been covered by countless artists over the years.

The song's origins are somewhat murky, but it is believed to have originated in the southern United States, possibly in the Appalachian Mountains. The earliest known version of the song dates back to the 1820s, when it was collected by musicologist and folklorist John Jacob Niles. Niles recorded the song as part of his efforts to preserve traditional American folk music, and he later performed it as part of his own repertoire.

Over the years, A Poor Wayfaring Stranger has become a staple of the American folk music canon, and it has been covered by a wide range of artists, including Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, and many others. The song's haunting melody and spiritual themes have made it a powerful symbol of hope and perseverance, and it continues to inspire and move people around the world.

Composed by Stephen Foster. Arranged by Peggy Carter. Folk,Traditional. Octavo. 10 pages. Peggy Carter #5889603. Published by Peggy Carter (A0.945405).

This old song sounds NEW when it uses unexpected chord changes. It starts on a D chord, and ends on a D chord, but its what happens in between that makes this arrangement interesting. The hammer dulcimer accompaniment adds its own unique sound quality. The ranges are within the reach of an upper-level elementary choir through high school choral groups. As a piece of Americana this is a program piece appropriate for general audiences.

(The hammer dulcimer was a popular instrument in 19th Century America, as evidenced by advertisements seen in the Sears Roebuck and Montgomery Ward catalogues, and by the publication of instruction books throughout the 1800s and early 1900s. In fact, the instrument enjoyed a small burst of widespread acclaim due to its being a favorite of Henry Ford, and its inclusion in Henry Ford's Old Fashioned Dance Orchestra.)

Dryad Song is the fifth song in David Alpher's 6-song set, Songs of Transcendance, contemporary art songs with texts by Ralph Waldo Emerson and members of his nineteenth-century American Transcendentalist Circle. The chamber music of American composer David Alpher has been hailed by the critics: refreshingly direct and uncompromising • an extension of Bernstein's melodic style • strong melodic gift...unusual instrumental combinations...color and diversity. Dryad Song is scored for piano and voice, and is featured on the CD David Alpher: American Reflections, available at CDBaby.com. Composed by Latin American Folk Song. Arranged by Sarah Martinez. Children,Folk,Multicultural,Traditional,World. Octavo. 4 pages. Sarah Martinez #339170. Published by Sarah Martinez (A0.730914).

This arrangement of Alfonso XII has been adapted for SAB chorus (with optional divisi) and set to a piano accompaniment. This song tells a story about Alfonso XII, King of Spain from December 1874 until his death in November 1885. It is a song tale known in many Latin American countries. As is typical of folk songs, there are many popular variations and additional verses. Where are you going, Alfonso XII? Where are you going so sadly? I am looking for Mercedes because I lost her yesterday. Mercedes is already dead, and it's true because I saw her. Four dukes carried her through the streets of Madrid. The lanterns of the castle no longer want to light, Because Mercedes has died, and they are in mourning. Poor little Mercedes, she died like a flower. Similar arrangements for SATB, TB, 2-part, and unison choirs are also available. You may also find this song under the alternate title ¿Dónde vas, Alfonso Doce?.

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Colin Kirkpatrick. Folk,Historic,Patriotic,Traditional. Octavo. 11 pages. Colin Kirkpatrick Publications #850592. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.1257261).

Here’s a new SSA choir arrangement of that ever-popular American folksong Shenandoah.  The original song probably has its origins among the French Canadians who traded with Native Americans around the Great Lakes during the sixteenth century. These traders exchanged weapons and tools for animal furs, especially beaver pelts. Paddling their canoes along the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers the traders were well-known for their singing. However, as most of the traders were illiterate, the songs were never written down and went through numerous changes over the years and centuries.

In most versions of the song, the lyrics tell of a seafarer, possibly a canoeing fur-trader, who was in love with the daughter of Shenandoah, a Native American Chief who lived in what is now the state of Virginia. Shenandoah was a real person: evidently an individual of commanding presence who lived for over a hundred years.

Shenandoah became one of the most popular capstan shanties, a slow song which set a manageable pace for the crew in a heavy and lengthy task. Most versions of the song have a similar couplet at the end of each verse. In some transcriptions, the melody is written out entirely in 4/4 time; others use triple time and some arrangements use a mixture of both. In this version, the lyrics have been selected from different versions of the song.

This SSA arrangement for choir and piano is conceived for boy choir or girl choir and within easy technical reach of amateur or school choirs. The top soprano note is high F on the treble staff and the other parts fall well within the usual choral range. Each section of the choir takes the melody at some point. With a running time of 04:00 this piece is enjoyable to sing and hear. It’s an essential addition to your choir’s repertoire.

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Laurie Betts Hughes. Children,Contemporary,Country,Folk. Octavo. 34 pages. Dandelion Music Press #3256941. Published by Dandelion Music Press (A0.891215).

Lights of the Western Sky is a compilation of 3 celestial American folk songs collected by Ruth Crawford Seeger, commissioned by Casper Children's Chorale to celebrate the 2017 total solar eclipse visible in Casper, Wyoming in honor of Mick McMurray. The pieces are connected not only by the folk style and the star subject, but also by tracing the course of a day, and by focusing on the connection of the outer world to the inner soul.

I. Bright Morning Stars-- An additive processional on the ultimate theme of children singing. Though the traditional verses state that the fathers are down in the valley a-prayin''' and the mothers have gone to heaven a-shoutin' (or vice versa), the lyrics have been freely adapted in the folk tradition of floating verses (adapting lyrics to personal experience) to describe the children's experience. The opening percussion motif is intended to evoke Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man.

II. Oh, Watch the Stars-- Oh, Watch the Stars and Great Big Stars, combined in unique ways. The two songs used, Oh, Watch the Stars and Great Big Stars, are distinct in their own right. They have been fused together in this movement, borrowing the text from one and using the tune from the other, and modifying one to partner with the other when presented simultaneously. A fusion of two styles, this movement opens solemnly and culminates in a hoedown showdown.

This new arrangement focuses on several, specific aspects of the lyrics, and of the journey. Envisioning that one is walking to that land, the piano introduction, in a swing rhythm, is marked At a strolling tempo. When the chorus enters, there is a bounce to their step, with the staccato dots coming each time on the word with- Come and go with me to that land...

This is a jaunty expedition. One sees one's parents waiting in that land. Loving friends are there as well. A bit of scat singing and finger snapping adds to the energy.

A slower middle section, in blues style, affirms that They'll be no slavery in that land. Shackles are thrown to the ground, and freedom breaks forth. This leads to a quick and energetic return to the gospel song, with a final refrain of They'll be singing in that land, voices ringing in that land!

This is very American music, in a gospel, blues, and folk style.
