This is Canon #4, Regina Caeli (or O Queen of Heaven), is one in a collection of Five Easy Canons for the Church Year. All are composed for SAB Choir and all include optional organ/piano part. Each of these Five Canons were composed for my own small church choir in Manchester, New Hampshire. Choir directors, we all have those Sundays when we can have choir members absent due to seasonal illness or schedule conflicts. You will find each one of  them extremely easy to rehearse quickly. As you know, you only need to teach one easy melody to the entire group and you're all set. You will find each tune charming in its own way, depending on the season. There is one general anthem, one for Christmas, on for Lent or Passiontide, one for Easter and one for Pentecost. Each one is suitable for the smallest church choirs from trios, up to to the largest! Collect all five for easy seasonal planning.

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel (Veni, Veni, Emmanuel) is a Christian hymn for Advent and Christmas. This hymn has its origins over 1,200 years ago in monastic life in the 8th or 9th century. The Latin metrical form of the hymn was composed as early as the 12th century. The 1851 translation of the Latin lyrics by John Mason Neale in this arrangement continues to be used the most. This three-part arrangement (soprano, alto, tenor) with a piano accompaniment is appropriate for EASY INTERMEDIATE skill levels and above. The ranges are: Soprano (D to G), Alto (A to C) and Tenor (D to D). A separate sheet with lyrics for voices only is included with the score.

Whilst my school peers in the late 80s and early 90s were collecting tapes for their VHS video recorders, my family were collecting hi-fidelity CD recordings of classical masterworks. Three of these CDs stick in my mind; a period instrument performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed by Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert; a recording of the 1812 overture which boasted Real Cannons (and also warned listeners against setting the volume too high because it might damage the equipment!); and A feather on the breath of God, an album of works by Hildegard performed by Gothic Voices with soloist Emma Kirkby. Thus began my life long love affair with the life and works of Hildegard. I have been performing this particular Hildegard chant O Virtus Sapientiae in solo piano recitals since around 2014. Basically, I have been freely improvising on it, so it’s different each time. Some ideas formed during those improvisations which have really stuck in my brain. Published by Colin Kirkpatrick Publications (A0.522228). The text to this new SSA setting is by Peter Abelard, the medieval French scholastic philosopher, theologian and logician. The setting gives opportunities for soprano and alto solos though they can be sung tutti if more appropriate. The keyboard part is essential though there are two a cappella sections in the arrangement. The vocal parts all lie easily within average range. The keyboard part, with its plodding bass line (which may be doubled on double bass if required) gives the impression of the slow walk of Jesus to the Cross. This is a melancholy, reflective arrangement. Other SSA titles in this series of three Easter canticles are “My Song is Love Unknown� (Text by Samuel Crossman 1624-1683) and “A Time to Watch, A time to Pray (Text by John Mason Neale 1818-1866�. In the audio sample, soprano 1 is played by the flute, soprano 2 by the oboe and alto by the clarinet.
