When commissioning Rejoice and Sing it was our intention not only to have a concert work written for our Youth Chorale but also a work that would be an instrument in teaching Hassidism, for what better way is there to teach Hassidism than through its music. We also wanted to demonstrate that authentic Hassidic music can be arranged in a sophisticated musical manner without having to sacrifice the inherent folk nature and simplicity that is so indicative of Hassidic song. We were most fortunate in securing the talents of Sholom Kalib to carry out this project with us. Dr. Kalib from youth has been steeped with a unique blend of love and understanding of traditional Jewish music and a very high degree of general musicianship. He succeeded in turning these basically simple tunes into a highly inventive musical work without sacrificing the legitimate qualities of the material with which he was working. Lennon turned a negative reaction to Cynthia Lennon’s chatter into an inspired, positive, transcendental meditation-influenced song. It was first released on a charity album and included female backing vocals and a children’s choir. A pared back version was then released on the Beatles Let It Be album. I was inspired by but too late for the Space and Time themed RMIT Music concert, which happened to be on John Lennon’s birthday, and arranged the song for SAA voices, with the melody in an alto-friendly key, matching the CORP attendees at the time. The melody is faithful to the original recording, adds an accompanying “wah-wah� in the second verse, suggestive of the trippy guitar effect, and reinstates the female backing vocals in the third verse.

Drums and bass can add a lot here.It is an easy arrangement, but getting the order of the the verses was the most challenging part :)Enjoy!

It begins with a sparse staccato section which builds quickly to emulate the start of a rain shower, and then each song is added one after another until all three songs are sung at the same time. Then the rain sounds begin again until the rain shower ends with one final Drop. The piano score is simple and supports the singers, and because the song is in the key of F, Orff instruments can easily be added (or replace the piano entirely). Suitable for elementary aged students (range E4-D5), and perfect for a fall (autumn), spring, or early summer concert, or classroom instruction. Approximate performance time 1:40.
