Lasting approximately one and a half minutes (~1:30 min.), The River of Life and Death has three sections and ever-shifting tonality with a modal quality. The wordless text is written in IPA. While scored as SAT, all-female groups with strong low altos can perform it. It is appropriate for a wide variety of contexts, including concerts.

At that time, it was common practice for communities in Celtic Ireland to make specific declarations regarding important events such as births, deaths, political and religious occasions, as well as seasonal changes. This song imagines a somber announcement anticipating the arrival of the winter months.

When Richard of Chichester (1197-1253) was elected bishop in 1244 King Henry III refused to accept the appointment, favouring another candidate. The king even forbade anyone to house or feed Richard. However, Pope Innocent IV confirmed the appointment, and Richard became Bishop of Chichester in 1245. He was keen to restore order and reverence in the church and was known as an ascetic, displaying frugality and temperance throughout his life. On his deathbed he is said to have recited the prayer for which he is now very well known, Thanks be to Thee, my Lord Jesus Christ. These words became famous after their use in the song Day by day from Stephen Schwartz's musical Godspell (1971).

The Messe de Minuit was written around 1694 for the Jesuit church of Saint-Louis in Paris.What is remarkable about this mass is the use of ten French noëls (Christmas carols) in the composition. In the liturgy the birth of Christ is celebrated with three masses: the first during the night of December 24th, the second in the early morning of December 25th, and the third on the day itself. A special atmosphere surrounds the first of these masses on account of the midnight hour, and so Charpen­tier gave special expression to the long observed practice in France of including popular Christmas carols in the Christmas liturgy by including them in the composition of his midnight mass. Although the Council of Trent had forbidden this kind of borrowing of secular melodies in masses in principle, long established customs were tolerated. Charpentier’s justly famous Messe de Minuit represents a perfect synthesis between the secular and liturgical, and between the popular and learned. Adapting the vast majority of the Latin mass to French noëls, the Messe de Minuit’s fresnhess and joyful spirit perfectly represent Advent.  While Charpentier used ten different noël’s through the course of the work, the most serious moment of the mass, the statements of Christ’s incarnation, his mortal existence, and his death under Pontius Pilate, is given wholly original, appropriately sober music.

The bel canto composer Vincenzo Bellini (1801-1835) dedicated his arietta “Vaga luna, che inargenti� to Giluetta Pezzi, an Italian writer. The work is based on an anonymous text and was first published in 1838 by Casa Ricordi with two other songs by Bellini, “Il fervido desiderio� and “Dolente immagine di Fille mia.� Ricordi later included “Vaga luna� in a larger collection of Bellini’s songs published in 1935 to mark the one hundredth anniversary of the composer’s death. “Vaga luna� is a love poem in which the writer yearns to be reunited with his beloved. He repeatedly asks the moon, the “only witness to [his] ardent desire,� to “tell her� of the depth and sincerity of his feelings, and of his hopes that the future will bring them together. This arrangement preserves Bellini’s original piano part and places the melody prominently in the top soprano voice. The lower voices provide supporting harmonies informed by the accompaniment, moving largely in parallel motion, but with their own counter-melodic value. The arrangement is also available in a version for TTB voices.

KVAMusic Edition #6078593. Published by KVAMusic Edition (A0.768516). Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (9 October 1835-16 December 1921) was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist. He was a musical prodigy and made his concert debut at the age of ten. After studying at the Paris Conservatoire he followed a conventional career as a church organist, first at Saint-Merri, Paris and, from 1858, La Madeleine, the official church of the French Empire. After leaving the post twenty years later, he was a successful freelance pianist and composer, in demand in Europe and the Americas. As a young man, Saint-Saëns was enthusiastic for the most modern music of the day, particularly that of Schumann, Liszt and Wagner, although his own compositions were generally within a conventional classical tradition. He was a scholar of musical history, and remained committed to the structures worked out by earlier French composers. This brought him into conflict in his later years with composers of the impressionist and dodecaphonic schools of music; although there were neoclassical elements in his music, foreshadowing works by Stravinsky and Les Six, he was often regarded as a reactionary in the decades around the time of his death. He wrote the Oratorio de Noël (Christmas Oratorio) at the end of the 1850s and completed it in 1860. The first performanse was at the church La Madeleine in Paris December 1869. The work is dedicated to A Madame la Vicomtesse de Grandval. The work is originally scored for five soloists, soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, mixed choir (except no. 4 which is for SSAA), harp, organ and strings (in this edition the choir has been transcribed for a SSAA choir).
