Season of Ice is a choral piece for womens’ voices, accompanied by bells and percussion, based on an English translation of Winter, a 9th Century Gaelic poem. At that time, it was common practice for communities in Celtic Ireland to make specific declarations regarding important events such as births, deaths, political and religious occasions, as well as seasonal changes. This song imagines a somber announcement anticipating the arrival of the winter months.

The text to this dramatic, intense song was inspired by the events of the summer of 2020; that said, the trope it addresses goes back for many years. The message is this: no person can be summed up by one emotion, and all have the right to be angry, on occasion. Black women have more reason to be angry than a lot of people, and while we shouldn't be consumed by anger, we shouldn't feel like we can't express it, either. Anger results from hurt or fear; the more lyrical middle section alludes to the pain that we've experienced. The song ends with the defiant question: But what if I were? If you have questions, Raehann Bryce and Jeanne-Minette Cilliers capture this song perfectly in the YouTube video. Eyewitness accounts tell us that carols, such as Franz Gruber’s “Stille Nacht� (“Silent Night�) were sung (which is feautured in this piece), seasonal greetings in several languages rang out across the trenches, and simple gifts of food and memorabilia were exchanged. In that one brief and beautiful moment, the human spirit triumphed. Fighting ceased, and the world was at peace. White Winter Hymnal was first released by the American indie folk band Fleet Foxes in 2008 as the first single from their debut self-titled album. The song was written by group member Robin Pecknold and has been covered by several groups and solo singers including Kim Wilde in 2013 and Pentatonix in 2014.

The meaning behind White Winter Hymnal is somewhat open to conjecture. Pecknold has explained that he intended this gently uplifting song to be like Whistle While You Work from Snow White â€“ something to hum along to as you do the dishes. Pecknold added that the words actually tell a more painful story about loss of the innocence of youth, being about my experience when I was a kid, you know, like I had my really tight group of friends. But as we grew up from grade school to junior high to high school, everybody just kind of split off, and everybody kind of changed. I went from like this tight-knit group to, seemingly for no reason, everybody was kind of going their own way. That song is just about that feeling.

This very accessible arrangement, featuring piano and guitar accompaniment with tambourine percussion, is ideally suited to winter and general programming, and makes an ideal concert opener.
