Trained as an artist, he became an art teacher and later supervisor of art education in the public schools of Sharon, Pennsylvania. An active layman in the Methodist-Episcopal church, DeVenter showed particular skills during annual evangelistic meetings held by the church. Church members urged him to become an evangelist, and after five years of wavering between ministry and his desire to be recognized as an artist, he committed his life to one of evangelism.DeVenter travelled extensively throughout the United States, England, and Scotland, assisted by the singer Winfield Weeden. Although an active hymn-writer, only two hymns remain popular today, one of which is I Surrender All. Given the nature of his call and commitment to ministry, the text of this hymn gains deeper significance.

The message is this: no person can be summed up by one emotion, and all have the right to be angry, on occasion. Black women have more reason to be angry than a lot of people, and while we shouldn't be consumed by anger, we shouldn't feel like we can't express it, either. Anger results from hurt or fear; the more lyrical middle section alludes to the pain that we've experienced. The song ends with the defiant question: But what if I were? If you have questions, Raehann Bryce and Jeanne-Minette Cilliers capture this song perfectly in the YouTube video. First appearing shortly after the American Civil War, the hymn gained popularity over the next century. Pete Seeger revived the hymn in the 1960s, and it has continued to gain in popularity since then. Irish artist, Enya, recorded it in 1991 in her album, Shepherd Moons. This arrangement is for an INTERMEDIATE SAB (soprano, alto, baritone) CHOIR with a piano accompaniment. This haunting and nostalgic melody and harmonies will be welcome in both worship services and secular programs wherever music is loved.  A separate sheet for the voices is included along with the score.
