The Dream of the Rood by the poet Caedmon is one of the earliest English-language Christian poems. This work sets to music stanzas from the poem selected & translated by (and used with the permission of) Fr. Charles Boyd. Effectively a short Mystery Play, it is a dialogue between a chorus and the Rood, voicing its feelings at bearing Christ and being a necessary part of the salvation of the world. With a light organ accompaniment, optional hand-bell / tubular bell, SSA, SAB splits and a Bass solo, this 8-minute work would be ideal for Good Friday or general Passiontide use. Composed during the pandemic, this setting for SAB chorus and piano of Thomas Hardy's poem, The Darkling Thrush begins with a bleak picture of a barren and hostile landscape in winter. Then, as the voices narrate the sudden appearance of an agèd thrush, frail, gaunt, and small who floods the air with joyous singing, the piano accompaniment bursts into a reel. The final stanza muses that the cause for the bird's ecstatic sounds must have been some blessed hope / Whereof he knew and I was unaware.
