This setting of famous poetry by Emily Dickinson is another in a series of Easier Anthems for Smaller Choirs and makes use of well designed voice leadings in a rich harmonic progression that is repeated with a gentle and affirming conclusion. The middle section is more active with unison/octave doublings for strength and contrast, and the opening section repeats with a peaceful ending. This piece gives smaller ensembles the opportunity to sing richly progressive harmonies and melodic lines that are nonetheless easy to learn and execute.

In The Mood - Choral Arrangement for SSA and Piano - Arranged by Michael Thomas Coull

In The Mood is a popular big band-era jazz standard, recorded and made popular by American band leader Glenn Miller in 1939. 

Composer Joe Garland (also Glenn Miller’s arranger) based In The Mood on a riff from the composition Tar Paper Stomp by Wingy Manone, and lyrics were added by Andy Razaf.  The first recording under the name 'In The Mood' was released by Edgar Hayes & His Orchestra in 1938.

In 1983, the Glenn Miller recording from 1939 was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.  In 2004, the recording was inducted into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry which consists of recordings that are ‘culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant’.

In 1999, National Public Radio (NPR) included the 1939 Glenn Miller recording in its list of 'The 100 most important American musical works of the 20th century'.
 
Glenn Miller’s record In The Mood, with I Want To Be Happy on the B-side, became the best-selling swing instrumental record of all time.

This 'Andrew Sisters style' SSA choral arrangement is an exciting and fun jazzy song - a great addition to any choir concert.

<兵車行> (Chariot Marching) is the poet written by Du Fu in the Tang Dynasty (AD 712-770). He wrote the <Chariot Marching>, dated back about 1300 years before. There are two difficulties in composing that song: 1. It must show a magnificent marching spirit, at the sametime it must also express grief and resentment. 2. It is not easy to arange the long and short sentences in a reasonable chorus for the repeated melody. On November 11, 2018, it coincided with the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Leaders of various countries gathered in Paris, France to hold a celebration. I guess, none words of any speakers of that meeting will have more vitality than Du Fu’s <Chariot Marching> to the future history, simply because Life is short. Art is long.
