Composed by Sholom Kalib. Children,Jewish. Octavo. 78 pages. Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings #2347255. Published by Ayotte Custom Musical Engravings (A0.733023).

When commissioning Rejoice and Sing it was our intention not only to have a concert work written for our Youth Chorale but also a work that would be an instrument in teaching Hassidism, for what better way is there to teach Hassidism than through its music. We also wanted to demonstrate that authentic Hassidic music can be arranged in a sophisticated musical manner without having to sacrifice the inherent folk nature and simplicity that is so indicative of Hassidic song. We were most fortunate in securing the talents of Sholom Kalib to carry out this project with us. Dr. Kalib from youth has been steeped with a unique blend of love and understanding of traditional Jewish music and a very high degree of general musicianship. He succeeded in turning these basically simple tunes into a highly inventive musical work without sacrificing the legitimate qualities of the material with which he was working. It is hoped that those using this arrangement will find the same degree of success that we have had in our many performances.

We wish to acknowledge with appreciation the following who made this work possible: Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Liebowitz of Dayton, Ohio who sponsored the commissioning of this work; Rabbi Jack Riemer, the board of directors and the members of Beth Abraham Synagogue, Dayton, Ohio for their support and help in many projects of the Youth Chorale; the devoted and hard working members of the Beth Abraham Youth Chorale who gave birth to this work and who, through their many unique accomplishments, have carried the message to their community and to communities throughout the United States that Jewish youth is indeed vibrant and very much alive.

It is our fervent hope and prayer that this work will be a significant addition to the great heritage of Hassidic music and that those who will utilize it will indeed have an opportunity to Rejoice and Sing.

The melodies included are:

SKU: A0.890639

Composed by Stella ter Hart. Arranged by Stella ter Hart. 20th Century,Folk,Standards. 12 pages. Stella ter Hart #3455153. Published by Stella ter Hart (A0.890639).

This hauntingly beautiful and artistic arrangement of She's Like the Swallow contains the original, very old Newfoundland folk text very rarely used due to it's tragic story line. It is in the genre of beware the uncaring man common in folk songs of Europe which served to teach and warn young girls about the dangers of infatuation.  This genre travelled to the United States and Canada in the 1700's. The expression apron low/apron high is a common thread in this genre and refers to being pregnant.  She's Like the Swallow tells the tragic tale of a young girl who has fallen in love with, no doubt, a handsome but uncaring man.  The story is told from each character's perspective plus an observer (narrator).  The girl ultimately creates her own funeral bower of rose petals (ripping them off in desperation as she frantically runs through a garden), lies down on this 'bed of roses' and dies.  You have probably heard this song many times without ever knowing the true meaning due to significant verses left out.

You will need a skilled accompanist!  The accompaniment utilizes significant word painting throughout to highlight the haunting melody line. Word painting depicts the swallow, uncaring cruelty, desperation, blindly going in circles, anger, church bells and fading away/dying.  The conductor is free to take liberties with the tempi and dynamics in order to create a unique interpretation that will resonate with their own choral group.

This arrangement of She's Like the Swallow is an exceptional festival or competition piece and one that should be in the repertoire of every skilled women's choir!

Composed by Andrew J. Boyle. Arranged by Lyrical Publishing. Celtic,Folk,World. Octavo. 10 pages. Lyrical Publishing #2881155. Published by Lyrical Publishing (A0.953934).

One of the most haunting love songs from Ireland. In Andrew J. Boyle’s interpretation the shifting temperament of the song has been given special attention – the conflict between optimism and foreboding. The text of the song, which tells of a heartsick young girl longing to be reunited with her lover, is known in Irish collections from the mid-18th century. In early versions the object of the girl’s affections was an Irish highwayman who was hanged in 1750 for pursuing his ‘trade’ on the Curragh. It has had various titles, including The Lamenting Maid and – particularly in Scottish versions – The Winter it is Past.

The origin of the melody My Country ’Tis of Thee is not known but assumed to generate from Europe, where it is also used for the national anthem of the United Kingdom, God Save the Queen. The text for My Country ’Tis of Thee was written by Samuel Francis Smith and was given its first public performance on July 4th, 1831 at an Independence Day celebration in Boston. It was published a year later under the title America.
This arrangement was performed at the Capitol for the 2017 presidential inauguration. Required to be an unaccompanied arrangement, it follows a theme and variations structure where the melody is passed throughout the choir. Due to the nature of the event, this arrangement is deliberately ceremonial in feel.Duration: 2:15.

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Hans Rudolf. 19th Century,Christian,Historic,Praise & Worship,Religious. Octavo. 19 pages. Hans Rudolf #798998. Published by Hans Rudolf (A0.1200196).

A Poor Wayfaring Stranger is a traditional American folk song with roots that can be traced back to the early 19th century. The song tells the story of a weary traveler who is journeying through a difficult world in search of a brighter future in the afterlife. The song's haunting melody and poignant lyrics have made it a favorite of singers and audiences alike, and it has been covered by countless artists over the years.

The song's origins are somewhat murky, but it is believed to have originated in the southern United States, possibly in the Appalachian Mountains. The earliest known version of the song dates back to the 1820s, when it was collected by musicologist and folklorist John Jacob Niles. Niles recorded the song as part of his efforts to preserve traditional American folk music, and he later performed it as part of his own repertoire.

Over the years, A Poor Wayfaring Stranger has become a staple of the American folk music canon, and it has been covered by a wide range of artists, including Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, and many others. The song's haunting melody and spiritual themes have made it a powerful symbol of hope and perseverance, and it continues to inspire and move people around the world.
