Tobias Clausnitzer (1619-1684) was a German Lutheran pastor and writer of theological treatises, sermons, and hymns. His best-known hymn, perhaps, is Liebster Jesu wir sind bier, translated to English and published as Blessed Jesus, at thy word by the English hymn-writer and educator Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878) in her Lyra Germanica — Hymns for the Sundays and Chief Festivals of the Christian Year, translated from the German (1858), and repeated in her Chorale Book for England (1863). Winkworth was also translator for Clausnitzer's Wir glauben all an einen Gott, Yater, Sohn und heilgen Geist (We all believe in one true God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost), a metrical paraphrase of the Apostles Creed designated for Trinity Sunday in the Culmbach-Bayreuth Gesang-Buch (1668). Winkworth also included this in her Chorale Book for England.This new musical setting, mostly in unison and briefly expanding to three-part harmony at the peak of each verse, is very singable by small and developing choirs composed of soprano, alto, and baritone/bass voices. The accompaniment, with sustained tones, is best realized on organ.The opening phrase, We all believe in one true God, may be sung by a solo male voice, similar to the opening intonation of a chanted canticle or psalm. This is evidently an earlier song with some similar words in the refrain. The Good Physician was published in the shape note hymnal, The Southern Harmony and Music Companion as early as 1835. Balm in Gilead was published in The Revivalist as early as 1868. Both of these songs were collected by their publishers and the lack of a listed composer shows their apparent age. ♫ The Good Physician has 4 verses with no refrain. Balm in Gilead has 4 verses with a refrain. ♫ Music and hymn singing was an important catalyst in both the First Great Awakening (1730 to about 1755 in colonial America) and the Second Great Awakening (1790-1840 in the American frontier of the time.) Probably the world’s most well-known song in the habanera style arranged for SSA + piano.‘La Paloma’ was written in the early 1860s by the Spanish Basque composer Sebastián Iradier, after a visit to Cuba.  Particularly popular in the Spanish speaking world, especially Mexico, ‘La Paloma’ has also been written and recorded in various other languages over the years.  (You may know the English version ‘No More’ sung by Elvis Presley in his film Blue Hawaii.)  I have read that along with ‘Yesterday’ by The Beatles, it is one of the most recorded songs in the history of music, certainly the most recorded Spanish song.Iradier’s original Spanish lyrics are written in four verses from the point of view of a sailor leaving Havana and parting from his sweetheart, dreaming of their wedding day and life together, and asking her to cherish his spirit if it returns to her window as a dove.  This SSA version has English text which tells the story in two verses.The piano accompaniment is a simple habanera style arrangement which allows the SSA harmonies to shine through.
