As a veteran teacher of 19 years, he has enjoyed the opportunity of teaching at both the Middle and High School levels and composing for all of his groups. He also serves as the Minister of Music of Children at the Berean Christian Church in Stone Mountain. He obtained his Bachelors of Music Education degree from Armstrong Atlantic State University and his Masters of Music Education degree in Choral Conducting from Georgia College and State University. His other musical achievements include arranging music for the 1996 Closing Ceremonies for the Summer Olympics and for the grand champion of the Savannah Onstage National Singing Competition. Tate was an Anglo-Irish poet, hymn writer and lyricist, who became Poet Laureate in 1692. He’s best known for The History of King Lear, his 1681 adaptation of Shakespeare's play. He also wrote the libretto for Henry Purcell's timeless opera, Dido and Aeneas. The traditional melody of While Shepherds Watched is well-known, but this new setting brings in a wealth of new musical material. This is a tuneful work and is sure to be enjoyed by your singers and audiences alike. It is in 2/2 time throughout but journeys through several contrasting keys. It’s also available for SSA and SATB choirs with keyboard accompaniment.  There’s an a cappella section in the middle and more suited to experienced singers. The piano part is not difficult and should be within the reach of any competent pianist. This piece would be ideal for Nativity presentations or would make an excellent addition to your Christmas service or concert. Relatively speaking, these melodies travel between a collection of pitches extending from lower Sol to upper Sol (Ex: Amazing Grace, Happy Birthday, the familiar theme from Brahms Symphony No. 1, 4th movement). Learning to hear and navigate these basic Sol-to-Sol tonal relationships is a vital step for students learning to sight-sing using the solfege system. Here is a warm-up exercise of a Sol-to-Sol melody traversing keys having one to three sharps or flats. There are several typical Re-Ti-Do cadential gestures and a few simple skips. This exercise reviews basic patterns to build fluency in beginners. Sing using solfege hand symbols.
