A short and effective piece for ATB choir (no further divisi needed). This piece has been popular with younger choirs, and has been sung several times by the National Youth Choir of Scotland's training choir. It would be suitable for any choir who are a bit short on upper voices but still want some new and interesting music. It is simple enough to be learned by ear if needed, though reading will be preferable. Suitable for a lay clerks' ATB Evensong, or any other church service, and will also work well as a concert piece.

The text, an old Scottish prayer, is suitable for almost any occasion. This is part of a set of three pieces with words from Carmina Gadelica, a book of ancient Scottish prayers, along with Come I This Day To The Father and The Peace Of God, also available through SheetMusicPlus/SheetMusicDirect. The song is made of three parts. The first is an introduction based in the popular rhythmn. The second, for soprano the melody. The third is a round based on the popular song.

Premiered in Burgos (Santa Cruz de Juarros) in May 2018 by Escolanía Salvé and Kontari Landarbaso. .

Lullabye (Goodnight My Angel)

 

 

This absolutely gorgeous song was written by Billy Joel in response, I believe, to his young daughter asking him what happens when people die and, as he didn’t believe in the afterlife, he was trying to avoid answering her.

 

I was asked to arrange this as a duet with a cello and a ‘smattering of (SSA) choir.’  As I was listening to recordings of this song, a second voice emerged for me, possibly someone who has passed on, calmly lulling the child to sleep whilst her father is trying to distract her from her questions. This was indeed the interpretation felt by people I played it to who found it very moving.

A few months back, I sat reading a book containing a reflection on death by the Venerable Bede. It struck me that it might make a decent poem verse, so set to writing that. Then I realised that it might go well to music.  So we have a short anthem  suitable for around the 25th May, the feast day of St Berde, or maybe for Funerals or other times of introspection.
