Evocative music that speaks to loneliness and sharingEasy to follow trance-style electronic trackStars Through the Rain (2022) by Adrienne Inglis (ASCAP) and Walter Torres (BMI)SAB and electronic track by Walter TorresText — Stars Through the Rain by Kim Stafford Program note — Duration 3:23Difficulty 2 (High school)Language — SpanishProgram note — Commissioned by Inversion’s new youth choir Nova for its inaugural concert “Star Stuff†in June 2023, Stars Through the Rain is scored for SAB chorus by Adrienne Inglis with electronic track created by Walter Torres. Kim Stafford’s poignant poem of the same name tells the story of a young woman living alone in a remote corner of the world. She witnesses remarkable images of a rainbow over the moon and stars showing through the rain showers. She yearns to share these beautiful experiences with another person. The piece sets the choruses of the poem, which start in a lonely mood and subtly evolve, giving the listener the hope of being lifted into a sharing relationship with another soul. The electronic track weaves natural and synthesized elements together, creating a dreamlike soundscape evoking the night sky. The emotive arpeggiated melody line alternates between minor and major tonality, capturing her melancholic yet hopeful yearning to share this sublime moment with somebody else. The driving percussion elements represent the pitter-patter of rain drops. Synthesized pads provide the harmony and are affected by filter sweeps, a sonic interpretation of starlight refracting through rain sheets.YouTube link for electronic track: https://youtu.be/HlQFoy9hw0E.

Choral Choir,Choral (SSA) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1287383 Composed by Sebastián Iradier. Arranged by Julie Settle and Sally Bauer. 19th Century,Latin,Multicultural,Romantic Period,Standards,World. 4 pages. Julie Settle #878401. Published by Julie Settle (A0.1287383). Probably the world’s most well-known song in the habanera style arranged for SSA + piano.‘La Paloma’ was written in the early 1860s by the Spanish Basque composer Sebastián Iradier, after a visit to Cuba.  Particularly popular in the Spanish speaking world, especially Mexico, ‘La Paloma’ has also been written and recorded in various other languages over the years.  (You may know the English version ‘No More’ sung by Elvis Presley in his film Blue Hawaii.)  I have read that along with ‘Yesterday’ by The Beatles, it is one of the most recorded songs in the history of music, certainly the most recorded Spanish song.Iradier’s original Spanish lyrics are written in four verses from the point of view of a sailor leaving Havana and parting from his sweetheart, dreaming of their wedding day and life together, and asking her to cherish his spirit if it returns to her window as a dove.  This SSA version has English text which tells the story in two verses. The piano accompaniment is a simple habanera style arrangement which allows the SSA harmonies to shine through.

Choral Choir (SAB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.915688 Composed by Richard Joseph Barber. 20th Century,Christian,Christmas,Sacred. Octavo. 11 pages. Barber Music Company #3820397. Published by Barber Music Company (A0.915688). Voicing: SAB. Ranges: Sop., F4 to G5; Alt., A3 to D5; Bass, F2 to D4.                                                                                      Mood: Rejoicing, praise and thanksgiving over the Father's gift of His Son, who came to set us free from sin and death. Difficulty: Not difficult. Not hard to learn. Fun to sing. The piano part will take some practice and will require a comfortable octave reach. History: The Father Sent the Son is the title song of a cantata I composed ten or so years ago for a church choir that could barely muster a men's section. They loved to sing. They rehearsed every Sunday afternoon between services and sang every Sunday morning for worship and often in the evenings. They loved the entire cantata and sang it with enthusiasm. Since that time other choirs have song the cantata, and I have added and subtracted and rewritten through the years. I wanted to get the entire cantata as close to perfection as possible before I published it, but I have decided to publish the portions I am most happy with piecemeal for the time being. When all portions are where I thing they should be, I will publish the entire cantata as one work. Lord willing, of course.  Please let me know if you enjoy the music I write. It is encouraging to hear from people who have enjoyed my work, or even from those who want to offer a criticism or suggestion. Dick Barber, aspiringtunerjb@sbcglobal.net

Choral Choir,Choral (SAB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1389486 By Leonard Cohen. By Leonard Cohen. Arranged by Justin Matthew Starr. Contemporary,Pop,Rock,Standards. 16 pages. J M Starr Music #973074. Published by J M Starr Music (A0.1389486). “Hallelujah†was originally released by Canadian singer/songwriter Leonard Cohen in 1984 on his album Various Positions. This composition, however, is one of the few in history that may be more well-known due to covers of the song than the original version. In 1991, John Cale did a cover of the song that removed the synthesizers, gospel choir, full band, and low, borderline-talking bass voice from Cohen’s original; and replaced it all with a bare-bones piano and tenor voice. It is not difficult to argue that this arrangement of the composition became the definitive version that all future covers would be based on: from Jeff Buckley’s stripped-down guitar and voice 1994 version, to Rufus Wainright’s piano and voice 2001 cover for the soundtrack to the motion picture Shrek, to k.d. lang, the a cappella group Pentatonix, and many, many more. When I first arranged this song in 2010 for my 8th grade SAB choir, I did not know the John Cale version existed; rather, I started by transcribing the Rufus Wainright recording and then made it my own from there. My arrangement is melodically akin to the Wainright, but I added harmonies in various places throughout. Lyric selection was also a choice I had to me, as each version of the song contains a different number of verses. Cohen’s 1984 original had four, and then in 1988 he sang a live version with seven (supposedly he drafted over 80 different verses!). I decided to go with five. This allowed me to structure the song in a way that got feature and give the melody to: a Soloist(s) (verse 1), the Baritones (verse 2), the Altos (verse 3), the Sopranos (verse 4) and then the entire choir (verse 5). Over the years that I have performed this with my students, I couldn’t help myself from rocking out with little bluesy fills and licks in the final choruses, so I decided to write it in. I hope you, your students, and accompanist have fun with that!

Choral Choir (SAB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.749241 Composed by Folksong from Switzerland, canton Aargau. Arranged by Deborah Krauss. A Cappella,Folk,Instructional,Multicultural,World. Octavo. 2 pages. Cold Springs Publications #355154. Published by Cold Springs Publications (A0.749241). In Swiss-German dialect, this well-known folksong from the canton of Aargau in north-central Switzerland is arranged here for 3 mixed voices. In true folksong fashion, there are 12 verses total, a story about a young lad who goes off to war, and after a year comes home to find his sweetheart now has a new love. Looking for consolation from his mother, she instead tells him he should have never left! In this arrangement, only three verses have been selected, just to keep the story short and sweet. Translated: 1) In Aargau are two sweethearts, they loved each other well; 6) God greet you dearest maiden, to you my heart is true; 8) Good looks and riches has he, and both are dear to me, and then a repeat of verse 1.

Choral Choir (SAT) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1200196 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Hans Rudolf. 19th Century,Christian,Historic,Praise & Worship,Religious. Octavo. 19 pages. Hans Rudolf #798998. Published by Hans Rudolf (A0.1200196). A Poor Wayfaring Stranger is a traditional American folk song with roots that can be traced back to the early 19th century. The song tells the story of a weary traveler who is journeying through a difficult world in search of a brighter future in the afterlife. The song's haunting melody and poignant lyrics have made it a favorite of singers and audiences alike, and it has been covered by countless artists over the years. The song's origins are somewhat murky, but it is believed to have originated in the southern United States, possibly in the Appalachian Mountains. The earliest known version of the song dates back to the 1820s, when it was collected by musicologist and folklorist John Jacob Niles. Niles recorded the song as part of his efforts to preserve traditional American folk music, and he later performed it as part of his own repertoire.Over the years, A Poor Wayfaring Stranger has become a staple of the American folk music canon, and it has been covered by a wide range of artists, including Joan Baez, Johnny Cash, Emmylou Harris, and many others. The song's haunting melody and spiritual themes have made it a powerful symbol of hope and perseverance, and it continues to inspire and move people around the world.

Published by Johnson Gao (A0.1007008). <兵車行> (Chariot Marching) is the poet written by Du Fu in the Tang Dynasty (AD 712-770). He wrote the <Chariot Marching>, dated back about 1300 years before. There are two difficulties in composing that song: 1. It must show a magnificent marching spirit, at the sametime it must also express grief and resentment. 2. It is not easy to arange the long and short sentences in a reasonable chorus for the repeated melody. On November 11, 2018, it coincided with the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. Leaders of various countries gathered in Paris, France to hold a celebration. I guess, none words of any speakers of that meeting will have more vitality than Du Fu’s <Chariot Marching> to the future history, simply because Life is short. Art is long.

Choral Choir (SSA) - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.768518 Composed by Camille Saint-Saens. Arranged by Roar Kvam. Christmas,Romantic Period. Octavo. 80 pages. KVAMusic Edition #6078597. Published by KVAMusic Edition (A0.768518). Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (9 October 1835-16 December 1921) was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist. He was a musical prodigy and made his concert debut at the age of ten. After studying at the Paris Conservatoire he followed a conventional career as a church organist, first at Saint-Merri, Paris and, from 1858, La Madeleine, the official church of the French Empire. After leaving the post twenty years later, he was a successful freelance pianist and composer, in demand in Europe and the Americas. As a young man, Saint-Saëns was enthusiastic for the most modern music of the day, particularly that of Schumann, Liszt and Wagner, although his own compositions were generally within a conventional classical tradition. He was a scholar of musical history, and remained committed to the structures worked out by earlier French composers. This brought him into conflict in his later years with composers of the impressionist and dodecaphonic schools of music; although there were neoclassical elements in his music, foreshadowing works by Stravinsky and Les Six, he was often regarded as a reactionary in the decades around the time of his death. He wrote the Oratorio de Noël (Christmas Oratorio) at the end of the 1850s and completed it in 1860. The first performanse was at the church La Madeleine in Paris December 1869. The work is dedicated to A Madame la Vicomtesse de Grandval. The work is originally scored for five soloists, soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, mixed choir (except no. 4 which is for SSAA), harp, organ and strings (in this edition the choir has been transcribed for a SSAA choir). Texts in the Oratorio de Noël is drawn from the Old and New Testaments: (1. Instrumental).    2. Luke 2,8-14.   3. Psalm 39,1.   4. John 11.27.   5. Psalm 117, 26-28.   6. Psalm 2,1 and Gloria Patri.   7. Psalm 109,3 and Graduale.   8. Isaiah 49,13.   9. Lamentations 2,19, Mica 4.13, Zachary 9,9, Isaiah 62,1.   10. Psalm 95,8-9, 11,13.
