Choral Choir (SSA) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.891215 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Laurie Betts Hughes. Children,Contemporary,Country,Folk. Octavo. 34 pages. Dandelion Music Press #3256941. Published by Dandelion Music Press (A0.891215). Lights of the Western Sky is a compilation of 3 celestial American folk songs collected by Ruth Crawford Seeger, commissioned by Casper Children's Chorale to celebrate the 2017 total solar eclipse visible in Casper, Wyoming in honor of Mick McMurray. The pieces are connected not only by the folk style and the star subject, but also by tracing the course of a day, and by focusing on the connection of the outer world to the inner soul.I. Bright Morning Stars-- An additive processional on the ultimate theme of children singing. Though the traditional verses state that the fathers are down in the valley a-prayin''' and the mothers have gone to heaven a-shoutin' (or vice versa), the lyrics have been freely adapted in the folk tradition of floating verses (adapting lyrics to personal experience) to describe the children's experience. The opening percussion motif is intended to evoke Aaron Copland's Fanfare for the Common Man.II. Oh, Watch the Stars-- Oh, Watch the Stars and Great Big Stars, combined in unique ways. The two songs used, Oh, Watch the Stars and Great Big Stars, are distinct in their own right. They have been fused together in this movement, borrowing the text from one and using the tune from the other, and modifying one to partner with the other when presented simultaneously. A fusion of two styles, this movement opens solemnly and culminates in a hoedown showdown.Laurie Betts Hughes, ASCAP | www.LaurieBettsHughes.com

Choral Choir (SAB) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1120365 By Philip Le Bas. By J-B Lully / G Bizet. Arranged by Philip Le Bas. Christmas,Praise & Worship,Religious,Sacred,Traditional. Octavo. 8 pages. Philip Le Bas #721616. Published by Philip Le Bas (A0.1120365). A new arrangement by Philip Le Bas of a thirteenth century French Christmas carol from Provence harmonized by Jean-Baptiste Lully (1632-87, attrib.) and, more famously, by Georges Bizet (1838-75, in his L'Arlesienne Suite of 1872.) In France the melody is still tightly associated with Christmas, and French audiences start singing their own Christmas words whenever they hear the melody (the arranger has heard it himself!) The English translation used here is adapted from a variety of sources. The three kings (or more precisely the magi from St Matthew's gospel) are seen marching towards Bethlehem with their fantastic golden wealth and grandeur. But why are they going to see a low-born baby and why do they worship this child who will die on a cross? The organ sets the scene from the beginning with its marching accompaniment, and the first verse is sung in unison by all three parts. The second begins with a canon, as used by Bizet, and then breaks into harmony. The first section of the third verse is much quieter and legato, sung by the sopranos and altos, using wonderful chromatic harmonies based on another section from Bizet's suite. The lyrics express wonder at the beautiful music heard from the camp of the kings. The second section, sung in differentiated unison then begins to wonder why the kings stoop so low to a baby in a manger. Finally the fourth verse, sung in full harmony, returns to the marching accompaniment and reiterates the amazement of meeting these kings with their mysterious mission. The carol is aimed at parish choirs with limited resources, but a good organist. The melody is well-known, much of it is in unison, and other sections are relatively easy to sing. Care should however should be taken to sing the dotted rhythms accurately - this is what gives the carol its marching character.

Choral Choir (3-Part) - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.844645 Composed by Phil Beaman. Folk,Jazz,Spiritual. Octavo. 13 pages. Phil Beaman #4719605. Published by Phil Beaman (A0.844645). This piece is a Showstopper! Rock-a-My-Soul is a Choral piece based on the traditional folk/gospel/spiritual. I originally envisioned this piece for a Middle School Choir, but it works well with any group that wants to have fun. It is written in 3 part Treble clef which the conductor may assign as they see fit for their choir and performance. (Part 3 works very well with male voices.) Parts all stay within an octave from Middle C to C above.  This lively version uses many styles of jazz to drive this piece, yet there is also a recurring descending third ostinato which is the rocking comfort this piece imparts.   The piano part plays an important role in driving this piece and setting the moods. Each of the seven sections shifts the mood and jazz style but maintains a level of energy.  After completing the jazz arrangements of the traditional chorus I tried various ways to extend the piece. One day while working on this piece I saw a news clip about another school bullying incident. I immediately made the connection -- at its heart Rock-a-My-Soul is really about overcoming obstacles to find comfort and acceptance. So I wrote some additional lyrics to create an anti-bullying, anti-depression section. I have soloists deliver the main lines to make it personal and invitational then the choir backs them up, call and response style, with Everything's gonna be alright.  Lyrics throughout are all carefully worded so that the song may be used for either secular or sacred purposes. The context and location where it is sung will flesh out the implied and intended meaning. If sung in school it means you have friends here who accept you; if sung in your place of worship then it means that your God accepts you.Simple power, beauty and meaning all wrapped in joyous jazz!13 page score, 4:00 minute performancerecording is various excerpts of the accompaniment to show different stylistic sections

Choral Choir (SAB) - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1042625 Composed by Todd Marchand. Sacred. Octavo. 7 pages. Con Spirito Music #647400. Published by Con Spirito Music (A0.1042625). Tobias Clausnitzer (1619-1684) was a German Lutheran pastor and writer of theological treatises, sermons, and hymns. His best-known hymn, perhaps, is Liebster Jesu wir sind bier, translated to English and published as Blessed Jesus, at thy word by the English hymn-writer and educator Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878) in her Lyra Germanica — Hymns for the Sundays and Chief Festivals of the Christian Year, translated from the German (1858), and repeated in her Chorale Book for England (1863). Winkworth was also translator for Clausnitzer's Wir glauben all an einen Gott, Yater, Sohn und heilgen Geist (We all believe in one true God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost), a metrical paraphrase of the Apostles Creed designated for Trinity Sunday in the Culmbach-Bayreuth Gesang-Buch (1668). Winkworth also included this in her Chorale Book for England. This new musical setting, mostly in unison and briefly expanding to three-part harmony at the peak of each verse, is very singable by small and developing choirs composed of soprano, alto, and baritone/bass voices. The accompaniment, with sustained tones, is best realized on organ. The opening phrase, We all believe in one true God, may be sung by a solo male voice, similar to the opening intonation of a chanted canticle or psalm. Dynamic contrasts (crescendi and decrescendi) throughout follow the rising and falling of the melodic line and should be carefully observed. ©Copyright 2022 Todd Marchand / ConSpiritoMusic.
