Difficulty: Not difficult. Not hard to learn. Fun to sing. The piano part will take some practice and will require a comfortable octave reach. History: The Father Sent the Son is the title song of a cantata I composed ten or so years ago for a church choir that could barely muster a men's section. They loved to sing. They rehearsed every Sunday afternoon between services and sang every Sunday morning for worship and often in the evenings. They loved the entire cantata and sang it with enthusiasm. Since that time other choirs have song the cantata, and I have added and subtracted and rewritten through the years. I wanted to get the entire cantata as close to perfection as possible before I published it, but I have decided to publish the portions I am most happy with piecemeal for the time being. When all portions are where I thing they should be, I will publish the entire cantata as one work. Lord willing, of course.  Please let me know if you enjoy the music I write. When commissioning Rejoice and Sing it was our intention not only to have a concert work written for our Youth Chorale but also a work that would be an instrument in teaching Hassidism, for what better way is there to teach Hassidism than through its music. We also wanted to demonstrate that authentic Hassidic music can be arranged in a sophisticated musical manner without having to sacrifice the inherent folk nature and simplicity that is so indicative of Hassidic song. We were most fortunate in securing the talents of Sholom Kalib to carry out this project with us. Dr. Kalib from youth has been steeped with a unique blend of love and understanding of traditional Jewish music and a very high degree of general musicianship. He succeeded in turning these basically simple tunes into a highly inventive musical work without sacrificing the legitimate qualities of the material with which he was working. It is hoped that those using this arrangement will find the same degree of success that we have had in our many performances.

We wish to acknowledge with appreciation the following who made this work possible: Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Liebowitz of Dayton, Ohio who sponsored the commissioning of this work; Rabbi Jack Riemer, the board of directors and the members of Beth Abraham Synagogue, Dayton, Ohio for their support and help in many projects of the Youth Chorale; the devoted and hard working members of the Beth Abraham Youth Chorale who gave birth to this work and who, through their many unique accomplishments, have carried the message to their community and to communities throughout the United States that Jewish youth is indeed vibrant and very much alive.

 It is our fervent hope and prayer that this work will be a significant addition to the great heritage of Hassidic music and that those who will utilize it will indeed have an opportunity to Rejoice and Sing.

This piece was a small commission from a Thai woman who wanted something for her church choir to sing during a memorial for her mother. The forces available were SAB choir plus a Tenor soloist and someone in the choir who could play flute. The flute part is optional, the solo can be taken by anyone who is capable or sung by all the men in unison. The text expresses the values we all admire in a Life that has been lived well in the service of others. It is equally effective in a religious service or a secular setting, with well written vocal lines, a strong melodic character, and a rich harmonic foundation.

I wanted to create an arrangement where the tune is less often in the Soprano voice, giving the Alto's and Bari's a chance to have the tune. This arrangement is designed to be a suitable for choirs with a small (or new) Bari section. The Bari line often sings with either the Soprano or the Altos, effectively making this a (mostly) two part harmony piece, with a few three-part harmony sections.

This is a simple arrangement of this well loved carol, for 3 part lower voices.  I wanted something for my own lower voices with a small element of challenge but largely easy to learn lines. Each part has a go on the tune also!  The piano part is around grade 4-5, so conductors who also lead from the piano should be able to give it a go.

This song is a timeless masterpiece; there are so many wonderful settings of Berkeley Square, but surprisingly not many for three-part a cappella. I wanted to feature each section in this arrangement and while doing so, pay homage to all the great ensembles who have kept this song relevant and alive for so many years. I hope you enjoy.
