German.Hessenberg studied in Leipzig with Günther Raphael and was a singer in the Bach Choir under the direction of Karl Straube. Later he was professor of music theory and composition at the Frankfurt Musikhochschule. It was particularly in the field of sacred and secular choral music that he created important and frequently sung works, among them the well-known motet 'O Herr mache mich zum Werkzeug deines Friedens' (C 37176). The present two three-part folk-song settings (SABar) are composed in a polyphonic style and are suitable even for small choirs. Two settings of Away in a Manger (Murray and Kirkpatrick) are juxtaposed with the Polish carol Infant Holy, Infant Lowly. The choral writing is very accessible for any choir of modest ability and the piano accompaniment is generally supportive of the voices. The final verse which uses both the Murray and Kirkpatrick melodies simultaneously could be sung a capella or with accompaniment. This not-too-difficult arrangement for choirs with limited male voices would make a lovely addition to your holiday concert or church service.

Published by Kristine Johanek (A0.707965). This Austrian Carol is written for  an SAB choir with an optional solo, and can also be used as a vocal trio. At two and a half minutes long, it is a fine piece for worship or concert settings. Harmonies are fairly easy to learn, and the antiphonal refrain is presented with melody taken in turn by treble and baritone voices. Its simplicity makes it an excellent choice for your young choir, or for a choir looking to add repertoire quickly. The piano accompaniment is moderately easy, and integral to the harmonies of the piece. The lyrics present the baby Jesus as the newborn king, with the shepherds, angels and Mary all playing their parts in the drama. An excellent choice of repertoire for a group wishing for a traditional sounding song that is still a bit different than the usual Christmas carol. (The current sound sample is the SA version of the piece.).

This setting of the traditional 15th century French carol is derived from the arranger's SATB settings but here with keyboard accompaniment and C instrument plus two optional handbells. The first three verses are simplified to mostly unison or in canon on the 3rd verse. An instrumental interlude features the C instrument and accompaniment in more expansive and contemporary treatment. In the final verse the choral writing and harmonies create a more contemporary feel to this 15th century classic. It then closes with the hollow open fifth harmony from the beginning of the piece.
