I Was Only Nineteen, I Was Only 19 or A Walk in the Light Green is the most widely recognised song by Australian folk group Redgum. The song was released in March 1983 as a single, which hit number one for two weeks. This version has been created for Full Orchestra (with optional TTB or SAB choral parts). The piece should be easily playable by Intermediate level Full Orchestra. There are optional parts for English Horn, Clarinet 3, Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone & Contra Bassoon. The piano part is important for the core rhythms section, as is the guitar. The Violin 1 parts does go into third position towards the end, but all other string parts stay in first position. The song itself is a first-person account of a typical Australian soldier's experience in the Vietnam War, from training at a military academy in Australia to first hand exposure to military operations and combat, and ultimately his return home disillusioned and suffering from both PTSD and, it is implied, the harmful effects of Agent Orange. This piece would work well at any ANZAC Day or Memorial Day event for the Armed services.
