Choral Choir (SSA) - Level 3 - Digital Download

SKU: A0.887268

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Michelle Willis. Christmas,Contemporary,Renaissance,Sacred. Octavo. 4 pages. Teton Music #3138323. Published by Teton Music (A0.887268).

Lucious harmonies make this familiar, 15th century Christmas carol fresh again. The piece begins with percussive 'dings' and 'dongs' as they mimic the ringing of church bells. The remainder of the piece splits into four part women's harmony with flowing, moving lines in each vocal part. Excellent selection for church, school or professional ensembles. May be sung in English or French.

Duration: 2 minutes, 45 seconds

English Lyrics

Bring a torch, Jeanette, Isabella!
Bring a torch, to Bethlehem come!
Christ is born. Tell the folk of the village
Mary has laid him in a manger.
Ah! Ah! beautiful  is the Mother!
Ah! Ah! beautiful is her child!

Who is that, knocking on the door?
Who is it, knocking like that?
Open up, we've arranged on a platter
Lovely cakes that we have brought here
Knock! Knock! Knock! Open the door for us!
Knock! Knock! Knock! Let's celebrate!

It is wrong when the Baby is sleeping,
It is wrong to speak so loud.
Silence, now as you gather around,
Lest your noise should waken Jesus.
Hush! Hush! see how the Baby slumbers;
Hush! Hush! see how the Baby sleeps!

Softly now unto the stable,
Softly for a moment come!
Look and see how charming is Jesus,
Look at him there, His cheeks are rosy!
Hush! Hush! see how the Child is sleeping;
Hush! Hush! see how he smiles in dreams!

French Lyrics

Un flambeau, Jeannette, Isabelle
Un flambeau, courons au berceau.
C’est Jésus, bonnes gens du hameau,
Le Christ est né, Marie appelle
Ah! Ah! Que la mère est belle
Ah! Ah!

Do! Do! Que l’Enfant repose
Do! Do! Qu’Il rie en dormant.

Composed by Laurie Betts Hughes. Contemporary. Octavo. 11 pages. Dandelion Music Press #3104027. Published by Dandelion Music Press (A0.891202).

If you are looking to highlight your women's group and feature soloists from within the ensemble, this women's-choir-friendly piece is a harmonically interesting and pianistically supported way to explore those textures.

The composer writes: I often find it difficult to find music for grown women: much treble repertoire is written for children's ranges and feature children's themes, and the remainder seems to be about romantic relationships.  When searching for a text that speaks to the nature of a woman, I found Emily Dickinson's little-known For largest Woman's Heart I knew.  It seemed to pair naturally with Heart! We will forget him! and provide context rooted in personal strength.

While Dickinson was a prolific private poet, fewer than a dozen of her nearly 1,800 poems were published during her lifetime, usually altered significantly to fit the conventional poetic rules of the time.  A complete, and mostly unaltered, scholarly collection of her poetry first became available five full years after Aaron Copland's musical settings of her poetry.  Laurie Betts Hughes explores what Copland never had the chance to: Emily Dickinson's poem as the poet had conceived it, unedited, and with the punctuation she intended.

Composed by Camille Saint-Saens. Arranged by Roar Kvam. Christmas,Romantic Period. Octavo. 80 pages. KVAMusic Edition #6078597. Published by KVAMusic Edition (A0.768518).

Charles-Camille Saint-Saëns (9 October 1835-16 December 1921) was a French composer, organist, conductor and pianist.

He was a musical prodigy and made his concert debut at the age of ten. After studying at the Paris Conservatoire he followed a conventional career as a church organist, first at Saint-Merri, Paris and, from 1858, La Madeleine, the official church of the French Empire. After leaving the post twenty years later, he was a successful freelance pianist and composer, in demand in Europe and the Americas. As a young man, Saint-Saëns was enthusiastic for the most modern music of the day, particularly that of Schumann, Liszt and Wagner, although his own compositions were generally within a conventional classical tradition. He was a scholar of musical history, and remained committed to the structures worked out by earlier French composers. This brought him into conflict in his later years with composers of the impressionist and dodecaphonic schools of music; although there were neoclassical elements in his music, foreshadowing works by Stravinsky and Les Six, he was often regarded as a reactionary in the decades around the time of his death.

He wrote the Oratorio de Noël (Christmas Oratorio) at the end of the 1850s and completed it in 1860. The first performanse was at the church La Madeleine in Paris December 1869. The work is dedicated to A Madame la Vicomtesse de Grandval.

The work is originally scored for five soloists, soprano, mezzo-soprano, alto, tenor and baritone, mixed choir (except no. 4 which is for SSAA), harp, organ and strings (in this edition the choir has been transcribed for a SSAA choir).

Texts in the Oratorio de Noël is drawn from the Old and New Testaments: (1. Instrumental).

2. Luke 2,8-14.   3. Psalm 39,1.   4. John 11.27.   5. Psalm 117, 26-28.   6. Psalm 2,1 and Gloria Patri.   7. Psalm 109,3 and Graduale.   8. Isaiah 49,13.   9. Lamentations 2,19, Mica 4.13, Zachary 9,9, Isaiah 62,1.   10. Psalm 95,8-9, 11,13.

By Az Yet featuring Peter Cetera. By David Babyface Foster and Peter Cetera. Arranged by Sandra Milliken. Contemporary. Octavo. 11 pages. Sandra Milliken #5998067. Published by Sandra Milliken (A0.774766).

Hard to Say I’m Sorry is a No. 1 song by the American rock band Chicago. It was released in May 1982, as the lead single for the album Chicago 16.  The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 Chart in September of that year, where it remained for two weeks. It was the group’s second No. 1 single (their first was If You Leave Me Now) and their first top 50 hit since Tell No Lover in 1978. It spent twelve weeks in the top 5 of the Billboard Chart.

Written by Peter Cetera (Chicago’s bassist, who also sang lead vocals) and the group’s producer David Foster (who played piano on the track), the song is about a person trying desperately to hold on to a relationship that has fizzled out, promising to make up for his/her indiscretions and playing the we’ve been through so much card.

Hard to Say I’m Sorry was nominated for a Grammy Award for Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocal and was certified Gold by the Recording Industry Association of America in September 1982. Peter Cetera won an ASCAP Pop Music Award for the song in the category, Most Performed Songs.

Two arrangements of Hard to Say I’m Sorry are available for immediate download: one for SATB choir and one for SSA voicing, both with piano accompaniment.

Arranged by Tim Crooks. Christmas. Octavo. 3 pages. STR:UK String Arrangements #6596309. Published by STR:UK String Arrangements (A0.850387).

God Rest You Merry Gentlemen, traditional Christmas carol, arranged by Tim Crooks for SSA Choir (with optional String Ensemble).

This download is the choir part only.

A piano and choir score is available here: https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/god-rest-you-merry-gentlemen-str-uk-version-ssa-choir-score-dig....

This arrangement can be performed by SSA Choir & Piano, or alongside the compatible String Orchestra score, available here: https://www.sheetmusicplus.com/title/god-rest-you-merry-gentlemen-string-ensemble-digital-sheet-musi...

This jazzy 7/8 version cranks up the traditional carol into more of a party rendition, but remaining regular enough so it can still be sung by a congregation or school choir. Perfect for ending carol services and Christmas performances.

Technical challenges are mostly rhythmic, but 7/8 patterns are strong and repeat so is suitable for good intermediate groups.

About the arranger

Tim Crooks trained as a violinist and violist, working professionally in Manchester (UK) for many years. He was a founding member of the Manchester String Quartet and scored many arrangements for the group's recordings. Tim now orchestrates and conducts, working with orchestras including Manchester Camerata, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, RTÉ Concert Orchestra and the Philharmonia.
