Two Epiphany anthems for the price of one.  Firstly, Arabia's Magi sought him is a setting of original English words by the composer which references the journey of the Magi, their gifts and the redemption of the world following a humble birth.  This three-part (S,A,Bar.) homophonic piece is only one page in length but, in its 45-second duration, sets the scene for the following Latin motet.  Ubi est qui natus est uses the words from Matthew 2,2 when the Magi ask after the new-born King of Judea.  Comprising three short contrapuntal sections, this section lasts about 1.15.  Either section (English or Latin) may be used independently or, as intended, with the English followed immediately by the Latin.
Marked as Early Intermediate because there are a few intervals which may catch the unwary sight-reader.  However, with practice, this is certainly not difficult.  (And, yes, I know this is not actually a Christmas piece, but it may well be included in a service of Lessons & Carols - and there was no option for Epiphany.)

This is a lively arrangement based on the traditional text but a completely new melody. It's an English Christmas carol, which dates back at least to the 17th century. The reference to three ships is thought to originate in the those that carried the purported relics of the Biblical magi to Cologne Cathedral in the 12th century.

The joyful main theme is in 7/8 time and divides into 2+2+3. This is easier than it sounds because much of the piece consists of  four measures of 7/8 followed by a measure of 4/4. Singers will soon get to feel the rhythm and become familiar with this time signature. It’s scored for a fairly experienced SAA choir with keyboard accompaniment. The SAA voicing is ideal for high school or college use, where lower voices may not be available. The arrangement has really been conceived for boy-choir or girl-choir. In the reflective middle section, there are opportunities for solos, though they are optional. Audiences and singers alike are sure to enjoy this joyful music. The keyboard part is fairly straightforward though requires a competent pianist. It would be a great addition to your Christmas concert or service. (Duration: 03.00)

Voice ranges are well within normal high school range: Soprano 1: C4-F5; Soprano 2: A3 - D5; Alto: G3- D5. Taking words from Psalm 24, 7-10, this is an uplifting anthem for Palm Sunday.  With some unison passages (split between Sops & Men who can get a top F / Altos & Men who can get a bottom G / Full unison) and full SABar and an exciting but not difficult organ accompaniment this will reflect the joyous mood of the crowd welcoming Jesus into Jerusalem.  Dynamics are not stated, so left to the conductor to set as the Spirit moves, with the organ obviously being louder when introducing the verses than when accompanying.
(I have put this in the Lent and Easter sections, but that is only because there is no Palm Sunday listing.).

This arrangement of Alfonso XII has been adapted for SAB chorus (with optional divisi) and set to a piano accompaniment. This song tells a story about Alfonso XII, King of Spain from December 1874 until his death in November 1885. It is a song tale known in many Latin American countries. As is typical of folk songs, there are many popular variations and additional verses. Where are you going, Alfonso XII? Where are you going so sadly? I am looking for Mercedes because I lost her yesterday. Mercedes is already dead, and it's true because I saw her. Four dukes carried her through the streets of Madrid. The lanterns of the castle no longer want to light, Because Mercedes has died, and they are in mourning. Poor little Mercedes, she died like a flower. Psalm 100 ~ my absolute favorite verses in the Bible and what I claim as my life verses! Praise God for His gift of salvation and that every step I take is one step closer to an eternity with Him! A Joyful Sound Ministries ~ the name of our family music ministry that began in the early 1980’s and remains alive in my heart to this very day. God called my parents when they were very young to live a life of service to our King, dedicating every moment of their lives, their children, their careers, and their hearts to living His Word and beaming the light of Christ wherever they were called to walk, with whomever God placed on their path. From nursing homes, churches, Cook County Prison, homeless missions…God used our family in a mighty way to show Himself through the music, verses, testimony, and simple conversations He would inspire us to share. Through endless prayer, hours of musical rehearsing, and a lot of fun along the way, God gave us the privilege of sharing His love through ministry. I am forever thankful, inspired, and transformed because of what HE did through us! My family were early adopters on Compact Disc technology. Whilst my school peers in the late 80s and early 90s were collecting tapes for their VHS video recorders, my family were collecting hi-fidelity CD recordings of classical masterworks. Three of these CDs stick in my mind; a period instrument performance of Vivaldi’s Four Seasons performed by Trevor Pinnock and The English Concert; a recording of the 1812 overture which boasted Real Cannons (and also warned listeners against setting the volume too high because it might damage the equipment!); and A feather on the breath of God, an album of works by Hildegard performed by Gothic Voices with soloist Emma Kirkby. Thus began my life long love affair with the life and works of Hildegard.

I have been performing this particular Hildegard chant O Virtus Sapientiae in solo piano recitals since around 2014. Basically, I have been freely improvising on it, so it’s different each time. Some ideas formed during those improvisations which have really stuck in my brain. I’ve transferred some of these into this a cappella work.

Everyday, I pray with my children that “we would be a light� everywhere we go, reflecting God’s love and His light of salvation. After talking about what this means with them, I decided to write a song about exactly what this Light is and how we can find it, see it, then BE that to this world.

As we walk this earth, we are all searching for our purpose and something to believe in. I hope you’ll turn your eyes upward, listen to the lyrics of this song to help guide you, then find your compass and direction as you face the Light. Jesus died on the cross for us…He wants us to spend eternity with Him, enjoy the blessings of life, and find joy! Because we live in a broken world, there will be heartache…but if we walk with Him, we can find security, purpose, and companionship like we’ve never known.
