It began to appear in hymnals in the early 20th Century and it continues in popularity today. The lyrics are translated from a 6th Century hymn. This arrangement is for an Intermediate SAB (soprano, alto, baritone) Choir with a piano accompaniment.  A separate sheet for voices is included in addition to the score. McIntire has also arranged this hymn as an Intermediate Piano Solo, also available at this website.

Published by Stephen R Dalrymple (A0.818358). ♫The Good Physician with There’s a Balm in Gilead - Soprano, Alto, and Baritone arrangement by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫Balm in Gilead (in this arrangement) is NOT the well-known negro spiritual (There is a Balm in Gilead). This is evidently an earlier song with some similar words in the refrain. The Good Physician was published in the shape note hymnal, The Southern Harmony and Music Companion as early as 1835. Balm in Gilead was published in The Revivalist as early as 1868. Both of these songs were collected by their publishers and the lack of a listed composer shows their apparent age. ♫ The Good Physician has 4 verses with no refrain. Balm in Gilead has 4 verses with a refrain. ♫ Music and hymn singing was an important catalyst in both the First Great Awakening (1730 to about 1755 in colonial America) and the Second Great Awakening (1790-1840 in the American frontier of the time.) The arranger tried to achieve a frontier-like setting for the arrangement, going so far as to set The Good Physician in the mixolydian mode. ♫ This edition includes 3 files 1) the full score 2) vocal parts 3) smaller size suitable loading onto a 10 inch tablet.

Tobias Clausnitzer (1619-1684) was a German Lutheran pastor and writer of theological treatises, sermons, and hymns. His best-known hymn, perhaps, is Liebster Jesu wir sind bier, translated to English and published as Blessed Jesus, at thy word by the English hymn-writer and educator Catherine Winkworth (1827-1878) in her Lyra Germanica — Hymns for the Sundays and Chief Festivals of the Christian Year, translated from the German (1858), and repeated in her Chorale Book for England (1863). Winkworth was also translator for Clausnitzer's Wir glauben all an einen Gott, Yater, Sohn und heilgen Geist (We all believe in one true God, Father, Son, and Holy Ghost), a metrical paraphrase of the Apostles Creed designated for Trinity Sunday in the Culmbach-Bayreuth Gesang-Buch (1668). Winkworth also included this in her Chorale Book for England.This new musical setting, mostly in unison and briefly expanding to three-part harmony at the peak of each verse, is very singable by small and developing choirs composed of soprano, alto, and baritone/bass voices. The accompaniment, with sustained tones, is best realized on organ.The opening phrase, We all believe in one true God, may be sung by a solo male voice, similar to the opening intonation of a chanted canticle or psalm.
