This is an absolutely exquisite arrangement of a traditional Irish carol. The piece begins by establishing a traditional Celtic setting with sustained fifths that evolve and transform as they underscore the haunting melody. A short and effective aleatoric section gives each singer freedom to enter with the mystical melody at various times until all voices merge and sustain the final pitch. The harmonies created by the technique are sublime. The piece builds to a crescendo as the sopranos soar high supported by elegant harmonies. Finally, the piece ends with voices again entering at separate times to sing the final word. This otherworldly Christmas piece is sure to be a favorite for singers as well as audiences.
