In The Mood - Choral Arrangement for SSA and Piano - Arranged by Michael Thomas CoullIn The Mood is a popular big band-era jazz standard, recorded and made popular by American band leader Glenn Miller in 1939.  Composer Joe Garland (also Glenn Miller’s arranger) based In The Mood on a riff from the composition Tar Paper Stomp by Wingy Manone, and lyrics were added by Andy Razaf.  The first recording under the name 'In The Mood' was released by Edgar Hayes & His Orchestra in 1938.In 1983, the Glenn Miller recording from 1939 was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame.  In 2004, the recording was inducted into the Library of Congress National Recording Registry which consists of recordings that are ‘culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant’.In 1999, National Public Radio (NPR) included the 1939 Glenn Miller recording in its list of 'The 100 most important American musical works of the 20th century'. Glenn Miller’s record In The Mood, with I Want To Be Happy on the B-side, became the best-selling swing instrumental record of all time.This 'Andrew Sisters style' SSA choral arrangement is an exciting and fun jazzy song - a great addition to any choir concert.

Dumbarton's Drums speaks to the love of a woman, which is probably returned by the man, but we're never entirely sure (unless I'm being cynical).  The melody is lovely and soft.  While this arrangement maintains the simplicity of the melody, it explores several moods in odd key changes.  Most of the keys change logically, although they may need more rehearsal than the different verses.  This was performed very successful by a community chorus in which two women regularly sang tenor, so the depth of the sound was never compromised.
