♫The Good Physician with There’s a Balm in Gilead - Soprano, Alto, and Baritone arrangement by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫Balm in Gilead (in this arrangement) is NOT the well-known negro spiritual (There is a Balm in Gilead). This is evidently an earlier song with some similar words in the refrain. The Good Physician was published in the shape note hymnal, The Southern Harmony and Music Companion as early as 1835. Balm in Gilead was published in The Revivalist as early as 1868. Both of these songs were collected by their publishers and the lack of a listed composer shows their apparent age. ♫ The Good Physician has 4 verses with no refrain. Balm in Gilead has 4 verses with a refrain. ♫ Music and hymn singing was an important catalyst in both the First Great Awakening (1730 to about 1755 in colonial America) and the Second Great Awakening (1790-1840 in the American frontier of the time.) I wrote this SAB arrangement for my mostly freshmen Concert Choir students at Whetstone High School in Columbus, Ohio, including a violin solo (or other C instrument) and piano accompaniment to support the singers.  The first three verses are sung, and you'll see some of the words have been edited in order to have a better fit in a public school environment.  An excellent choice for middle school or 9th grade choir teachers look to supplement a holiday-themed program.  Also very fitting for Advent/Christmas church settings.  The violin solo has no bowing or slur marks, and so the player is free to write whichever markings he or she sees fit for performance.  I am happy to provide the violin PDF free charge if you email me at bhollihan5 AT gmail DOT com.  Minimum of 10 orders, please.

A simple reduction by Philip Le Bas of How beautiful upon the mountains by John Stainer (1840-1901) from SATB and organ to SABar and organ, to make it more accessible particularly to church choirs with few tenors and basses. This lovely short anthem is very suitable for Advent, but it is also appropriate at other times in the church's year.

The music for Built on the Rock (KIRKEN) by Ludwig M. Lindeman, a Norwegian composer, was published in Wilhelm A. Wexel's Christelige Psalmer. The original lyrics were by Nicolai Grundtvig. The hymn is in the Dorian mode with an AAB format. Published in 1840, it has continued growing in popularity, finding its greatest interest and availability in hymnals in this century. This arrangement is for Intermediate SAB Choir (soprano, alto, baritone) with a piano accompaniment. A separate sheet is provided for the voices along with the score.

Robert Schumann’s song cycle Myrthen was a wedding present to his wife Clara Wieck. Myrthen, or “myrtles,� were the flowers traditionally associated with a marriage celebration. Schumann completed the Myrthen cycle in 1840, totaling 26 Lieder (songs for solo voice and piano), with texts by prominent 19th-century German poets such as Heinrich Heine, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, and others. “Widmung,� which means “Dedication,� is the first song in the cycle, based on a love poem by Friedrich Rückert (1788-1866). The frequent repetition of the word “you� in the text, along with the soaring melody and undulating arpeggios that comprise the music, all serve to convey the composer’s state of blissful fulfillment as he contemplates marrying his beloved. This arrangement preserves Schumann’s original piano part as well as places the melody prominently in the top soprano voice. The lower voices provide supporting harmonies informed by the accompaniment, moving largely in parallel motion, but with their own counter-melodic value. It was premiered in 2013 by the University of Michigan Women’s Glee Club under the direction of conductor Jaclyn Johnson. The arrangement is also available in a version for TTB voices.
