Latin.As a singing teacher, choir director and not least as a passionate professional choir singer, Irina Rebhuna is perfectly familiar with the possibilities of the human voice. And so it is hardly surprising that the Latvian musician born in 1988 has devoted herself especially to the composition of vocal music. Her sacred choral work Libera me, Domine for mixed a cappella choir (SSAATTBB) won the special prize for the 'best composition for 4-6 voices' at the International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016. This church music gem, in which the eponymous Gregorian chorale is intonated by one of the (two) bass baritone sections at the beginning – over a musical tapestry woven by the remaining voices - and taken up again by all tenors at the end, is ideal for ambitious amateur choirs. The idea behind this work, says the composer, is 'the human reflection on the uncertain – on death, on Judgment Day or on what is inexplicable to us. Such as humility, excitement, fear,and atonement. The chant ends without ending, there is no solution. Life goes on because we ask the following question again and again: What will happen next?'.

English.The Irish composer Frank Corcoran already won several first prizes, such as for his English-language choral composition 'Eight Haikus' at the International Foundation for Choral Music in 2013. The almost 10-minute work for 4- to 8-part mixed a-cappella choir is based on eight secular texts written by Corcoran himself in the style of the famous Japanese haiku poems. In this shortest lyrical form of world literature which consists of only three lines, the composer born in 1944 uses a large variety of labials, sibilants and plosives and addresses socially relevant topics by means of simple descriptions of nature and seasons in a content-wise and musically figurative and almost mystical language.

Based on the Latin prayer 'Ave verum' from the 14th century, this sacred a-cappella choral work captures the special atmosphere of the mystery of the Eucharist in a musically impressive way. Characterized by dense chromaticism and successive changes of time and dynamics, it is based on a sophisticated handling of the text and a subtle musical language. Thus, the work is a demanding addition to existing Ave verum settings, both with regard to the music and to the performance practice.

Umso dankenswerter ist es, dass sich Tobias Bromann, seines Zeichens Kantor am Berliner Dom, dieses exquisiten Chorsatzes angenommen und ihn in seiner Umformung zu einem Kyrie nun auch kirchenmusikalischen Zwecken zugänglich gemacht hat. Dabei fügt sich der Kyrie-Text wie selbstverständlich in die flächige Polyphonie und die schwebenden Harmonien dieser geradezu meditativen Vokalkomposition ein. Ein wunderbares Stück Chorliteratur, das ganz auf renaissancehafte Klanglichkeit ausgerichtet ist.

After winning several national composition prizes, she was awarded the 1st prize of the 13th International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016 for Misericordias Domini for eight-part mixed a cappella choir. The complex sacred a cappella choral work is based on the eponymous Gregorian chorale (Psalm 89:2). This Latin choral piece is characterized by three main structures: by aleatoric sound clouds in major pentatonic scales which are emphasized by sustained organum-like notes from the Gregorian chorale melody, on the one hand, by Renaissance-style polyphony combined with modern harmony, on the other hand, and finally, by long static chords merging in space and harmony. A wonderfully mystical, spherical composition which, by means of ad libitum passages marked in the musical text, even gives the performer the opportunity to interpret the piece individually.

Japanese.Ivan Boži�ević, born in 1961, drew his inspiration for the eight-part meditation 'Yuku haru ya' from the famous haiku 'Departing Spring' by Matsuo Bashô. The secular a-cappella work for mixed choir is written in Japanese, yet the short text has been transliterated. This makes it easier to avoid the pitfalls of pronunciation as well as master the example words added to the sheet music edition which provide assistance of how to form vowels. Tone repetitions, sustained notes and subtle vocal sound layers make this Zen-like work on the parting of spring a charming, yet manageable piece even for young people. The jury of the International Competition for Choral Composition shared this view and gave the work the distinction 'Particularly suitable for youth choir' in 2013.
