Almost 40 compositions, half of which written for accompanied and unaccompanied choir, can currently be found in the catalogue of works by the young Polish composer Katarzyna Danel (born in 1992). After winning several national composition prizes, she was awarded the 1st prize of the 13th International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016 for Misericordias Domini for eight-part mixed a cappella choir. The complex sacred a cappella choral work is based on the eponymous Gregorian chorale (Psalm 89:2). This Latin choral piece is characterized by three main structures: by aleatoric sound clouds in major pentatonic scales which are emphasized by sustained organum-like notes from the Gregorian chorale melody, on the one hand, by Renaissance-style polyphony combined with modern harmony, on the other hand, and finally, by long static chords merging in space and harmony. A wonderfully mystical, spherical composition which, by means of ad libitum passages marked in the musical text, even gives the performer the opportunity to interpret the piece individually.

As a singing teacher, choir director and not least as a passionate professional choir singer, Irina Rebhuna is perfectly familiar with the possibilities of the human voice. And so it is hardly surprising that the Latvian musician born in 1988 has devoted herself especially to the composition of vocal music. Her sacred choral work Libera me, Domine for mixed a cappella choir (SSAATTBB) won the special prize for the 'best composition for 4-6 voices' at the International Composition Competition 'Musica Sacra Nova' 2016. This church music gem, in which the eponymous Gregorian chorale is intonated by one of the (two) bass baritone sections at the beginning – over a musical tapestry woven by the remaining voices - and taken up again by all tenors at the end, is ideal for ambitious amateur choirs. The idea behind this work, says the composer, is 'the human reflection on the uncertain – on death, on Judgment Day or on what is inexplicable to us. Such as humility, excitement, fear,and atonement. The chant ends without ending, there is no solution. Life goes on because we ask the following question again and again: What will happen next?'.

In my interpretation, the poem Voice Fragments is about the communication between a you and a me - dialogues that are intimately tied to the relationship between voices and words or speaking and listening.
With regard to myself, listening also involves paying attention to the tone of voice and body language of the speaker, and not only the words. If I choose not to listen, I would be compromising my ability to empathize, which would cause me to forfeit my voice and also make the world a poorer place.

The piece begins with sounds - a-ah, n-ng, s -, fragments that are also building blocks for words, units used and reused in various combinations to convey meaning. The same principle applies to music, where simple elements are used to build compositions, and they can also alter the meaning of the piece. - Cecilia Franke.

The dynamic of this diatonic, meditative composition is piano almost throughout. At the end of the third Vocalise the mood changes, however. A Song of Joys (2008/revised 2011) was composed for the Kansas City Chorale and given its first performance in March of 2009. The newly revised version was presented by the Simon Carrington Chamber Singers in June 2011. A Song of Joys is Walt Whitman's vast description of all of life’s—and death’s— joys, ranging from nature, love, and nostalgia, to more specific things like being a farmer, a soldier, mother, and reminiscing of catching lobsters by boiling them until they turn red. All of these ingredients—and many more—contribute to Whitman’s jubilant song. Selected passages from his lengthy poem have been set here for SATB divisi unaccompanied chorus.

The composer writes: When asked to write a work for The Rose Ensemble's 20th Anniversary Season, I looked for a text that would resonate with this special occasion, perhaps something to help 'crown' the May Day celebration. But I kept coming back to music: 'Music, gift of the highest God,' music with the power to 'untune the sky,' music that refreshes and gives us strength, 'affording solace to all.'
The music begins mysteriously with the John Dryden text split among the voices and ending with Alleluias. A sort of scherzo section follows, concluding with a declamation, The dead shall live, the living die, and music shall untune the sky. Then follows the setting of the Latin text of the title. The music is challenging, the textures interesting and varied. Duration: 4:30.
