The music begins mysteriously with the John Dryden text split among the voices and ending with Alleluias. A sort of scherzo section follows, concluding with a declamation, The dead shall live, the living die, and music shall untune the sky. Then follows the setting of the Latin text of the title. If I choose not to listen, I would be compromising my ability to empathize, which would cause me to forfeit my voice and also make the world a poorer place. The piece begins with sounds - a-ah, n-ng, s -, fragments that are also building blocks for words, units used and reused in various combinations to convey meaning. The same principle applies to music, where simple elements are used to build compositions, and they can also alter the meaning of the piece. - Cecilia Franke.
