Old Slavonic.The Sealed Angel, Shchedrin’s monumental choral work - over an hour long - is rooted in the tradition of the large scale liturgical compositions by Tchaikovsky and Rachmaninov, and, like them, is closely related to the Znamennyj raspev, the traditional chant of the Russian Orthodox church. But more than this, Shchedrin's richly varied score unites sacred and secular elements in almost exemplary fashion; the liturgical texts and the flow of the music inspired by Orthodox church music are fused together with interludes played on the flute, which above and beyond its colouristic role, plays the practical part of a pitch pipe for the members of the choir.

But I kept coming back to music: 'Music, gift of the highest God,' music with the power to 'untune the sky,' music that refreshes and gives us strength, 'affording solace to all.' The music begins mysteriously with the John Dryden text split among the voices and ending with Alleluias. A sort of scherzo section follows, concluding with a declamation, The dead shall live, the living die, and music shall untune the sky. Then follows the setting of the Latin text of the title. The almost 10-minute work for 4- to 8-part mixed a-cappella choir is based on eight secular texts written by Corcoran himself in the style of the famous Japanese haiku poems. In this shortest lyrical form of world literature which consists of only three lines, the composer born in 1944 uses a large variety of labials, sibilants and plosives and addresses socially relevant topics by means of simple descriptions of nature and seasons in a content-wise and musically figurative and almost mystical language.
