This melancholy tune was written after a memory of the deaths of Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens and the Big Bopper.  Don McLean was a child delivering newspapers when the headline came out and it had a profound effect on him.  It should be noted that this version is only around 4 minutes long, leaving out a number of verses.  Repeats may be added to reintroduce the verses as the performers see fit.
