The piece demands much agility from the performer, alternating in fast sections of arco and pizzicato. The work is in a rondo form, with the opening theme recurring between contrasting ideas, all related to the overall tonal centre of G. Most themes are characterised by the use of the seventh degree (in addition to the notes of the triad), which gives a touch of the blues style. There is much use of changing and irregular time signatures, as the piece explores rhythmic interplay and displacement. The work also plays with tonal ambiguity between major, minor and modality, in an almost jazz-like manner that is befitting to the double bass.
