Growing Toward the Light is a collection of pieces that Carol Wood began working on in a period of great sadness, when she and her husband discovered he was suffering from a kind of dementia similar to Alzheimer’s. Only a few of the thirteen pieces in the collection reflect the heartbreak and grief that followed, but, as Carol writes in her introduction, many musical friends encouraged her to try to keep playing and composing. Several of the pieces are dedicated to these friends, and many celebrate the beauty of trees or snow or even sleep. All the pieces are written in keys requiring no more than one sharp, and all are playable on full-sized lever harp or pedal harp. This allows the teacher to play a nice accompaniment along with the beginning student during their lesson. The accompaniments can also be played as a duet with another harp or piano by the student's sibling, parent, or friend.This book will have the kids wanting to practice! Subtitled Fun Songs for Beginners and Friends, it is an excellent supplement for any teacher of young students. The songs are very short, usually 2 or 3 lines, and have fun lyrics about dragons or dinosaurs. The first 7 songs have fingerings and placing brackets. Each tune has a musical concept the teacher can briefly touch on to reinforce theory, such as eighth notes, placing, measures, time signatures, intervals, accents, arpeggios, glisses, tempo, thumb slides, scales, pickup measure, accidentals, ties, and more. The most difficult, Baron’s Blues, is a jazzy piece that is actually easier on lever harp than on the pedal harp, because all the accidentals use lever pre-sets!  This is also true of Walkin’ Wally. Danny Solves the Mystery sounds much more difficult than it is. Hands cross, but do not play at the same time. Lullaby for Smokey gently puts the hands together in easy patterns. Walkin’ Wally is more challenging, but my students enjoyed it so much they practiced! 60’s rock vamp and walking bass makes it fun. Grumpy Dreams of Flying was composed for a student who wanted something mysterious sounding. Dreamy glissandi throughout most of this piece create the effect. Chasing Buddy is fast and cute, just like the Jack Russel Terrier it’s named after. Baron’s Blues is supposed to sound like a whiny puppy who just wants someone to play with him. Not too fast! Forest Friends has a new age feel with the additional benefit of being an etude for interval practice. Buckwheat’s Baby is a study on I, IV and V7 chords.
