The 12 pieces in Bulgarian Rhythm by the great Bulgarian composer Parashkev Haddjiev were written originally for piano. The composer had a special gift for composlng brief character pieces that convey a specific mood or illustlate a glven musical problem. Such are the pieces in this collection where the main issue is rfurthmic. Bulgarian Rhyhm, as Bartok calls it, is uneven. It alternates duple and triple beats within each measure. The pieces are fresh and cute in a typical folk-like style. Ravnopolska-Dean’s arrangement uses specific harp techniques and effects.   Mastering the rhythrnic patterns found in this colleetion enhances inner rhyhmic stability and provides a valuabie bridge to solving more complex rhytmic problems. As an additional teaching aid Ravnopolska-Dean’s performances of all of them are available on youtube.

Das Harfenstück ist im April 1987, 25 Jahre nach meinem bisher einzigen Solostück für Harfe (Sequenzen über Joh. I, 32) entstanden. Während mir früher die nicht vollständige Verfügbarkeit der chromatischen Skala bei der Harfe Einschränkung bedeutete, ist sie mir nun Anregung geworden. Präludium: quasi Perpetuum mobile, das (ähnlich wie bei „Trema“ oder „Studie über Mehrklänge“) teilweise gleichzeitig auf verschiedenen Tempo-Ebenen abläuft. Arioso: Versuch, eine deklamatorische Musik für ein Akkordinstrument zu schreiben. Passacaglia: 25 Variationen über 5 Töne. Widmung: für Ursula. -Heinz Holliger.

Four variations on this Scottish tune in the key of D. Variation 1 uses the Scottish snap and rolls. Variation 2 uses a moving pattern of eighth notes in the right hand. Variation 3 has harmonics throughout the entire left hand with triad and triad inversions in the right hand. Variation 4 uses majestic rolled chords and arpeggios throughout. Very nice solo addition!

Vira Variations - Vira is an Old Dance from the traditional music heritage of Portugal. I wrote this Variations for a ballet performance. This short piece allows different interpretations, and it is ideal for early/intermediates Students. Cnidarian Nocturnes for pedal harp solo explores a delicate world of sound that references as a metaphor the sea creatures classified as Cnidaria which drift through the sea at the will of the waves. The contrast between the weight of the massive waves and the cradling of these delicate, ethereal creatures brought to my mind the fragility of life and the forces to which each individual is subjected , along with the meaning and loss that is derived from this journey. The harp was chosen as an ideal voice for this sound world because of its delicate array of colors, its wide pitch range, and ability to create wavelike movement in the harmonies. It is for the intermediate to advanced level of playing.
