This famous Shaker quick dance has many names including Tis a Gift to be Simple, Simple Gifts, and Lord of the Dance. Aaron Copland included the melody in his ballet, Appalachian Spring (1944). Arrangements of Simple Gifts has been sung at three US Presidential Inaugurations (1985, 1993 and 2009).

Carrickfergus is a town in County Antrim, north of Belfast. The lyrics tell of a nostalgic person missing his homeland and wishing he could move back to Carrickfergus. Friedrich Schiller wrote the poem Ode to Joy in 1785 as a celebration of the triumph of the brotherhood of man against war and desperation. A revised version was published in 1808. In 1824 Ludwig van Beethoven used parts of that poem in his Ninth Symphony. In 1907 Henry van Dyke added his choice of words to Beethoven’s melody to create the hymn Joyful, Joyful We Adore Thee. Ode to Joy became the Anthem of the Council of Europe in 1972 and in 1985 the anthem of the European Community (EU). Ode to Joy is commonly used as a Wedding Recessional.

Saint Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) wrote Sacris Solemniis for the liturgy of the Feast of Corpus Christi. Panis Angelicus (Bread of Angels) was a verse in that Latin hymn. It has been reset by many composers, including César Franck (1822-1890). Franck’s Panis Angelicus within his Messe à trois voix (Mass for Three Voices – tenor, harp, cello with organ) has become his most famous piece.
