As a composer, a goal for Salazar is to create scores that help encourage classically trained musicians to improvise by writing cadenza-like improvisations into his pieces, making it so anyone at any level can improvise in performance. This approach lends to the most unique aspect of I See Stars in Your Eyes: the simple, easily performed improvisation section in the middle of the piece. Rather than imposing chord changes or fixed rhythm, this section has a written ostinato in the bass voice that is coupled with the freedom to improvise in the upper voice - allowing the performer to showcase their own musical voice.

One of the most popular hymns of all times, the poem, What A Friend We Have in Jesus, was a poem written by Joseph Scriven in 1855. He sent it from Canada to his Mother in Ireland. In 1868, American Charles Converse, an attorney and composer of hymns, came across Scriven’s poem and set the words to music, publishing it in a hymnal. Set in the key of F, the melody is shared equally between parts. Each part is of equal difficulty, although Harp II makes F# in each verse. Dynamics are clearly marked.

Although each piece is written in the key of F, lever and pedal changes are clearly marked and each piece has a few accidentals. Diamond shaped notes are used to indicate lever changes. Each dance possesses a charming quality and emulates its own style of the period. The suite can be played from beginning to end without interruption, that is, pedal and lever changes are indicated at the end of each dance so you are ready to start the next dance. Each dance is two pages and page turns are only required if playing the entire suite. This suite is perfect for wedding prelude and receptions, and provides elegant background music for any occasion.

The 12 pieces in Bulgarian Rhythm by the great Bulgarian composer Parashkev Haddjiev were written originally for piano. The composer had a special gift for composlng brief character pieces that convey a specific mood or illustlate a glven musical problem. Such are the pieces in this collection where the main issue is rfurthmic. Bulgarian Rhyhm, as Bartok calls it, is uneven. It alternates duple and triple beats within each measure. The pieces are fresh and cute in a typical folk-like style. Ravnopolska-Dean’s arrangement uses specific harp techniques and effects.   Mastering the rhythrnic patterns found in this colleetion enhances inner rhyhmic stability and provides a valuabie bridge to solving more complex rhytmic problems. As an additional teaching aid Ravnopolska-Dean’s performances of all of them are available on youtube.
