To be a creative and versatile pop harpist, classic training is valuable and necessary. However, the habit of playing every note as written is sometimes hard to break when learning to improvise. The act of playing notes spontaneously may be overwhelming to the classically trained harpist. There are more and more written arrangements for popular music available to buy, but is satisfying to have the skills to arrange one's own pieces. It is possible to play popular music from a fake book or by ear, with training. The suggestions in this book should help bridge the gap from classical to pop, and hopefully provide some tools for the improvisation necessary for playing popular music. These ideas come from Louise's own experience, and from workshops with nationally knows pop and jazz harpists. It is hoped that the material presented will open up new avenues for the harpist to arrange and improvise in order to widen opportunities to perform.With simple melodies and uncomplicated harmonies, this book also instructs the harpist on the basics of achieving that country-western sound, as well as techniques on imitating such traditional country western instruments as guitar, banjo, fiddle, string bass, and piano. All tunes were typeset to fit exactly on two facing pages to eliminate any page turns within a piece. If desired, the length of each piece can be lengthened by repeating some sections; section divisions are indicated by light double bar lines. Many people are unaccustomed to hearing tunes based on modes other than the Ionian or Aeolian. Therefore, you may find some of the melodic contours or harmonies to be unusual, unexpected, or even uncomfortable. There are only three lever changes in this entire book – and they all occur on the last note of the piece. Guitar chords are included so that the melody may be played by any C instrument, accompanied by chords on harp, lute, guitar, or keyboard. Also, the transcribed harp part can be played on any keyboard instrument with only minoradjustments.Dynamics, fingering, and metronome markings are provided throughout as an aid to performance. However, the harper should use whatever dynamics, fingerings, and tempos suit them, no matter what this book indicates! The maximum range needed for each piece is only 26 strings (3.5 octaves) from low C to high G. Therefore, it can be played on a small harp encompassing that range. Simply treat the C two octaves below middle C as the lowest C on your harp and adjust the octaves accordingly. Ignore any 8va indications and shorten glissandos as needed.

It can be played on a lap harp model as small as 26 strings, like the Harpsicle Fullsicle that I am playing in the video, or on a larger floor harp. Your model must have levers, though, as the melody changes keys repeatedly and so relies on several quick lever changes.The lowest note is the E below middle C and the highest is the G two octaves above middle C. As such, it should work on many common small or lap harp models, including Harpsicle harps, some Roosebeck Pakistani harps (depending on the range), Dusty Strings Ravenna 26, Marini Made lap harps, Heartland Harps Air Serenity, and many others. As noted above, it can also work on a larger floor harp with levers.The piece is light, quick, and repetative. By far the hardest element in my opinion is the succession of levers changes in the melody, though these come easier with practice. But less experienced harpists may also want to take into account that there are a few harmonics, played on both hands, in the middle section, and that the song will sound odd if these are omitted.Please note that the preview cuts off after the first half page of score. Programme Notes: Icarus Also Flew takes its title from the first line of the poem Failing and Flying by Jack Gilbert. He is referring to the classical myth of Daedalus and Icarus, an inventive father and son who bravely escape from their imprisonment in a tower by collecting the disposed feathers of seabirds, then fashion wings out of them and fly away. While the story is often treated as a morality tale--listen to your elders, don’t get cocky like the young man, Icarus, who, in such an understandable state of elation, ascended too close to the sun thus causing the wings to melt and his tumbling to his Mediterranean death--what Jack Gilbert reminds us is how regardless of one’s failure, the sheer transcendental experience of mortal flight remains glorious and unforgettable. Icarus’s fall was not into a legacy of disdain and oblivion, but in truth, he had come to the end of his triumph. This piece was the first of a series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies--his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!--though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his celebrated fifth symphony in C minor--the Fate symphony, as it is commonly known. I’ll let the listener find their own connections.About the Composer:Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.

This solo harp arrangement of Arrietty's Song from Miyazaki/Studio Ghibli's film The Secret World of Arrietty is wonderfully versatile, while preserving the key and overall character of Cecile Corbel's original piece. It can be played on a lever harp as small as 26 strings, with the lowest note being the C below middle C and the highest being the third G above middle C. It only requires one lever (the A below middle C) to be moved to effectively simulate the chorus key change. It captures both the iconic original celtic harp part, as well as the full melody (with Japanese lyrics taken into account), and also the building/shifting energy that the original piece achieved by adding additional instruments. I think it also successfully solves the problem of remaining interesting and dynamic throughout despite the song being so repetitive. In short, I am particularly proud of this arrangement.In part because it is so note-y, and because it just keeps moving with no room to rest or breathe, this is definitely one of the harder and more advanced pieces I have arranged for small/lap lever harp. It would still sound nice played under tempo, but you will need to maintain a consistent rhythm throughout. I advise practicing the left hand as blocked chords and paying particular attention to the right-hand octaves in the second rendition of the chorus.Please note that the preview cuts off after the first half-page of score.
