Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring

Bach composed a cantata called Herz und Mund und Tat und Leben. Though it is the 32nd cantata, it is listed as BWV 147. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring is the 10th movement of the cantata. It was customary to use previous melodies as a basis for a new work - a practice called Cantus prius factus. So, the chorale melody for this piece is a historic tune called Werde munter, mein Gemüthe. Jesu, Joy of Man’s Desiring is customarily performed at weddings, and during major church seasons such as Easter and Christmas.

This is an easy arrangement for harp which has only the main melody and the bass line. The structure of the whole piece has been shortened. The choral-like part of measures 9, 10 and 11 have been simplified. Enjoy!

If you want to challenge yourself and add one of the most well-known classical pieces to your repertoire, this song is for you! It creates such an elegant atmosphere, and people will be so impressed hearing it on the harp. The fingering has been carefully chosen to make it feel as comfortable as possible to play while staying as true as possible to the original. You'll find that a conscious effort is required to keep the right hand relaxed as you play with a long series of overlapping brackets.

Difficulty Level and Skills Required: Early-intermediate. The right hand plays the melody with a series of long overlapping brackets. The left hand is simpler often playing 2-3 notes per measure with occasional rolled chords. There are a few lever changes throughout.

Type of Harp: For big and small harps, 22 strings (C-C) and larger.

Range: The lowest note is D, almost one octave below middle C. The highest note is G, one and a half octaves above middle C.

Levers/Pedals: In the key of G major (F levers set to F sharp). A few F lever changes throughout.

I found this Passacaglia from Bach among some of my own handwritten manuscripts. It is a phenomenal piece.

Bach was definitive a great artist, a Genius.

Passacaglia is an Italian word. This music form was originated in early 17th-century Spain as a strummed interlude between instrumentally accompanied dances or songs. In this piece we can clearly experience this „Spanish strumming between „Bars 137 and 145.

The passacaglia was redefined in the late 1620s by Italian composer Girolamo Frescobaldi, who transformed it into a series of continuous variations over an ostinato bass pattern (which itself may be varied).

I added to this piece some interpretation symbols and rearranged it for the harp but every single note was left as it would be found in the original version. 

The piece is appropriate for advanced performers.

Most of the score is left to the interpretation of the artists involved, particularly the use of fingering. 

The piece is difficult but very Human. It requires focused endurance and some practice on certain passages. 

Once learned you will also be playing much better. 

Feel Free to apply in this piece the Art and technic that expresses entirely your individual skills and taste.
