The Harp Serenade and Disintegration explores the many idiomatic sounds of the harp while exploring the diverse sounds it can create through extended techniques. Serenade focuses on melody and timbre with the extended technique of tapping on the soundboard as a main element. Disintegration mixes sounds and inspiration from Gershwin, Brubeck and Salzedo. The focus is on rhythm and glissandos. The piece is in a quasi-rondo form that unravels the melody and rhythmic refrain as the piece moves in time. The extended techniques used in Disintegration are soundboard tapping, harmonics, and vertical fingernail sliding up the strings. Many people are unaccustomed to hearing tunes based on modes other than the Ionian or Aeolian. Therefore, you may find some of the melodic contours or harmonies to be unusual, unexpected, or even uncomfortable. There are only three lever changes in this entire book – and they all occur on the last note of the piece. Guitar chords are included so that the melody may be played by any C instrument, accompanied by chords on harp, lute, guitar, or keyboard. Also, the transcribed harp part can be played on any keyboard instrument with only minoradjustments.Dynamics, fingering, and metronome markings are provided throughout as an aid to performance. However, the harper should use whatever dynamics, fingerings, and tempos suit them, no matter what this book indicates! The maximum range needed for each piece is only 26 strings (3.5 octaves) from low C to high G. Therefore, it can be played on a small harp encompassing that range. Of course, playing with this in Dorian produced a lovely, rich melody and harmony, but further experimentation led me to a lighter-toned version of that same melody in Mixolydian. Thus, the idea of separating the song into Groom and Bride sections was born. Each section is ABA format, with the same A part in the respective modes, but their B part differs slightly. The third section (the Couple) utilizes the Groom's A part and the Bride's B part, symbolizing how a man and woman unite their lives as part of their wedding vows. Level: intermediate (12/8 time signature, no lever/pedal changes)Length: approximately 3 to 3.5 minutes, depending on tempo
