Teachers learn to be creative, especially with adult students. These are relevant pieces for the adult advanced beginner. Written for lever or pedal harp with well-marked fingerings. Lyrics are included for some songs. Some pieces are challenging because there are quite a few lever changes. Those who play pedal harp may need to write in pedal changes.

Overview: This tune was published by Daniel Dow in the 1770s and was probably composed by Roderick Morison (~1656-1713). My double-strung harp arrangement in the dorian mode has rolled, echoed chords, highlighting the depth of sound we can get from having two sets of strings. The accompaniment hand traverses the entire range of the harp, often overlapping the melody hand.

Good for: Performance, memorials, therapeutic settings.

Double-strung effects: The LH accompaniment frequently overlaps the RH melody range. Rolled accompaniment chords often contain the same note as the melody, creating a rolled echo. Some chords that aren’t rolled have doubled notes in both hands, creating depth. The repetition of LH patterns makes this a great piece to learn overlapping hands with.

Characteristics: Neither hand needs to place more than an octave spread. There are some four-note chords (always LH 1-3-5-8). The RH has almost no chords. Few of the chords are inversions. There are very few sixteenth notes; no more than three played together with one hand. The LH has two long-run patterns (1-5-8-9-10 and 1-5-8-9) which can be played with cross-unders or a wandering thumb. The RH has a few cross-overs/unders.

Finger placement: Finger number suggestions are provided for key phrases. Numbers above the notes are suggestions for the RH (marked with R or R# when they occur in the bottom staff). Numbers below the notes are suggestions for the LH (marked with L or L# when they occur in the top staff).

Notation: Chord symbols are provided. Treble clef is used for both staves, with 8va for very high notes.

Length: 4 pages. 60 measures, plus 12 if you take the repeat. 4 minutes.

Page turns: If you are printing, double-side pages 2 and 3 so that there is only one page turn. The RH can be used on all notes of page 2’s last measure, so that the LH can turn the page. All Through the Night, a traditional Welsh lullaby (Original: Ar Hyd y Nos), is often considered a standard Christmas carol. This version fits nicely on a small harp, with chords and suggested fingering provided for the right hand. The introduction can be played down an octave to fit even the smallest harp.

This is my simplified arrangement of Leaves from the Vine from the beloved animated series Avatar: the Last Airbender, as well as the more recent Netflix live-action adaptation by the same name. It is appropriate for beginner harpists working with an instrument as small as 24 strings, ranging from the F below middle C to the third F above Middle C (though the final verse of the song can be played an octave lower than written on smaller instruments). It is written in the key of B-flat Major with no accidentals or lever changes. As such, it could work on an instrument model without levers, so long as the instrument is tuned with Bs and Es flat. My own instrument is a Harpsicle Fullsicle Harp. But I believe it could also work, with few or no modifications, on a Harp-E, most/all of the Roosebeck Pakistani harp models, Dusty Strings Ravenna 26, or Musicmakers Sonnet 29. And, obviously, on any larger instrument

Please note that this simplified version of the song for beginner harpists contains ONLY Leaves from the Vine and none of the medley themes in my more advanced version.

This book contains 50 one-page harp solos for lap harp, ordered progressively from easiest to most difficult. The actual difficulty range is approximately easy to intermediate. You can use these pieces as melodic studies, as teaching/learning pieces, at gigs, etc.

There are several sample pages for you to view. The audio sample is an excerpt from Dusk.

You need C below Middle C and 24-26 strings to play these pieces.

Many of the pieces contain some fingerings and brackets. None of the pieces include chord symbols. There are no lever changes within any of the pieces. You will need levers on C, F and B strings. The solos are in C, F, G and D, along with related minor keys.
