Vira Variations - Vira is an Old Dance from the traditional music heritage of Portugal. I wrote this Variations for a ballet performance. This short piece allows different interpretations, and it is ideal for early/intermediates Students. It is a very pleasant piece to hear, and due to its flexibility it can be played in recitals and all kinds of other events. There is confusion as to who is the exact composer of this melody. Perhaps it was an anonymous Cistercian Monk, or King John IV of Portugal (1604-1656), or John Reading (1645-1692) or John Francis Wade (1711-1786). The first published version of it was in 1751 by John Francis Wade, a Scottish scholar of plainchant so he is often given credit as its composer.

This trio can be performed as is or with the matching Duet version. In Harp I both hands play the melody. Harp II has melody and some accompaniment. Harp III has accompaniment and the most notes.

The Chamarrita is a dance that was originated in mainland Portugal, which over the course of time has developed on the Azores Islands in this way.
Although the Gothic harp is not yet played in the region, this small piece for the lap harp is quite faithful to the tonal, melodic and rhythmic tradition in use on the island of Pico. Learn the Chamarrita and Have a lot of fun.
