Difficulty Level and Skills Required: Late-Intermediate. The right hand plays the melody line embellished with chords underneath, along with a couple of thumb slides and quick placing. The left hand has more challenging cross-unders with 10th intervals, brush muffles, and several lever changes. Both hands do some jumping between registers, and there are many rolled chords and some tempo changes throughout the piece.

Type of Harp: Big harp version is for 33-string harps and larger. Small harp version is for 26 string harps and larger.

Range: For big harps: the lowest note is C, two octaves below middle C. The highest note is G, two and a half octaves above middle C. For small harps: the lowest note is C, one octave below middle C. The highest note is G, two and a half octaves above middle C.

This book takes the practice of learning a harp piece one hand at a time literally. Each of the 20 etudes in the book has a companion page where the parts are broken down, one for right hand, one for left hand. These pages include fingerings and brackets, which will aid you in learning the parts, and help to develop good placing and fingering habits. Breaking it down by the hand means you can concentrate fully on the issues presented, without worrying about putting it all together.

The second half of the book is 20 solos. These solos are designed to work with the like-numbered etudes. Lots of sight reading practice!

The book also includes several pages of text with examples, to help you discover how best to use the book. 87 pages total.

If you learn along with the Video Course, Carrie will show you how to go beyond just playing the notes on the page by sharing tips on how to bring out the melody line so it sounds musical and doesn’t get lost among the many notes. She’ll also show you exactly how to practice those lever changes so that they feel controlled and predictable rather than rushed and frantic! This piece is challenging but so rewarding to play.

An Sìdhean translates as 'The Hill of the Fairies' in Gaelic. It is inspired by an ancient story from Argyll in Scotland and tells the tale of a farmer's wife who was taken away by the 'good people' or fairies of the land. It is suitable for early intermediate players who want to work on developing some different LH running patterns whilst managing a simple melody line. There are also some brushed chords and grace notes which can be optional, although these are musical elements that are regularly used in traditional music and give that special Celtic sound.
