A beloved traditional Welsh folk song suitable for any occasion, this is arranged for an ensemble of 3 to 6 harps (lever or pedal).   All fingerings and lever/pedal changes are clearly marked. Accessible to students and fun to play! Harp parts 1 and 2 are advanced-beginner or intermediate (requires reading a dotted 8th- sixteenth rhythm). Harp parts 3-4 may be combined and played by one person, or split into two even easier parts; their rhythms are simpler (quarter notes).

Parts 1, 2, 3 and 4 each have one or two lever changes; F and C levers are required. That is, they wouldn't be suitable for harps with NO levers.

Harps 5-6 are optional; they can also be combined and played by one person, or split into two very-beginner parts; only whole notes, can all be played with only the second finger, and no levers needed! Great for letting beginners enjoy playing in ensemble, learning to listen and count!

This is my arrangement of Bundle of Joy from the Disney/Pixar film Inside Out for celtic or folk lever harp. It can be played on a lap harp model as small as 26 strings, like the Harpsicle Fullsicle that I am playing in the video, or on a larger floor harp. Your model must have levers, though, as the melody changes keys repeatedly and so relies on several quick lever changes.

The lowest note is the E below middle C and the highest is the G two octaves above middle C. As such, it should work on many common small or lap harp models, including Harpsicle harps, some Roosebeck Pakistani harps (depending on the range), Dusty Strings Ravenna 26, Marini Made lap harps, Heartland Harps Air Serenity, and many others. As noted above, it can also work on a larger floor harp with levers.

The piece is light, quick, and repetative. By far the hardest element in my opinion is the succession of levers changes in the melody, though these come easier with practice. But less experienced harpists may also want to take into account that there are a few harmonics, played on both hands, in the middle section, and that the song will sound odd if these are omitted.

This is a simplified harp arrangement suitable for small harps of 15 strings or more.  Both hands are written in the treble clef.  Range is from Middle C up to Treble High A.  Can easily be adapted to fit harps of various sizes and strings.  There are no lever changes. This piece has a simple one note right hand melody, and an easy one or two notes per measure for the left hand.  Very playable for a beginning harpist, but chords could be added instead of single LH notes if a slightly more advanced arrangment is desired.  This lovely, gentle piece would be beautiful for background music, or for a church offertory or meditative music.  

This piece can be played on any harp such as a Harpsicle, Aklot harp, Fireside harp, Waring harp, Roosebeck Harp, Lyon and Healy, Camac, Salvi, Venus, and any Celtic harp.

This tune was published by Daniel Dow in the 1770s and was probably composed by Roderick Morison (~1656-1713). My double-strung harp arrangement in the dorian mode has rolled, echoed chords, highlighting the depth of sound we can get from having two sets of strings. The accompaniment hand traverses the entire range of the harp, often overlapping the melody hand.

Range and key: D dorian (all naturals). 24x2 strings. C below middle C through E.

Lever changes: None.

Good for: Performance, memorials, therapeutic settings.

Double-strung effects: The LH accompaniment frequently overlaps the RH melody range. Rolled accompaniment chords often contain the same note as the melody, creating a rolled echo. Some chords that aren’t rolled have doubled notes in both hands, creating depth. The repetition of LH patterns makes this a great piece to learn overlapping hands with.

Characteristics: Neither hand needs to place more than an octave spread. There are some four-note chords (always LH 1-3-5-8). The RH has almost no chords. Few of the chords are inversions. There are very few sixteenth notes; no more than three played together with one hand. The LH has two long-run patterns (1-5-8-9-10 and 1-5-8-9) which can be played with cross-unders or a wandering thumb. The RH has a few cross-overs/unders.

Finger placement: Finger number suggestions are provided for key phrases. Numbers above the notes are suggestions for the RH (marked with R or R# when they occur in the bottom staff). Numbers below the notes are suggestions for the LH (marked with L or L# when they occur in the top staff). This is an original composition for small or beginner harp. I wrote it on a 26-string lap harp, but the range (from the C below middle C to the C above middle C) would fit a harp as small as 22 strings. It is written in A minor, with no sharps, flats, or other lever changes. As such, this piece should be playable on pretty much any standard small or lap harp, regardless of whether it has levers.

Suggested harp models include Harpsicle Harps, Dusty Strings Ravenna 26, Musicmakers Sonnet 29, Fireside Harps, Marini Made lap harp models, Roosebeck Pakistani harps, Heartland Harps Air Serenity, Harp-E harps, and so on.

The piece was composed to cheer up a fellow harpist who is still at the beginning of their harp journey. It is meant to invoke a medieval castle, and, as such, could be the perfect piece to take to a renaissance fair, an outdoor wedding, a larp-ing event, or perhaps on vacation with you, if you plan on touring any old castles with your small/lap harp in tow and trying out the acoustics.

The song is appropriate for beginner harpists. You may need to practice replacing in a few places to avoid buzzing. But the piece only ever requires you to place in one direction at a time and minimizes the amount of time both hands play simultaneously. You can play it slower than I do in the recording, if you choose, and it should still sound nice.
