These are two beautiful O'Carolan tunes which go very well together. They are both in 6/8 so jig-time. The first should be played a little slower than the second. They are in the key of G, though the second tune is in a modal key. One only needs the F sharp lever. There are no key changes. These pieces have fingering throughout (optional) and some dynamics (optional). Because of the speed of the second jig I reckon one should be of intermediate ability to play this well. Of course with different fingering one could play this on the piano as well.

This is a lesser known tune by the great  O'Carolan. It is in a-minor. I have added a slow introduction before the actual planxty which is in a 6/8 time. There are no lever changes but the slow air requires a lot of expression and the faster part requires a fair bit of speed. There are quite a few ornamentations in there that need to come out clearly. So even though a lot of fingering has been added this is not for the very beginner! Around grade 4 or advanced grade 3. .

Composed over 400 years ago, it has undergone many changes in that time in both tune shape and words, with 3 different Silesian German sets of words, and many English ones. I hope this arrangement, while modern in harmony and with the tune altered to what is often sung today in English, will bring to mind and ear some of the noble feelings of tribute to the fir tree, evergreen and steadfast, of the original.

He lived between 1670 - 1738. I Arranged this piece for a lap harp, added some chords to be performed with the left hand and a few ornaments where introduced. Easy to perform in all kinds of events. So I decided to publish the work. It has a dance like structure and a nostalgic character, it can be played faster or slower and it is easy to learn. One of the most popular hymns of all times, the poem, What A Friend We Have in Jesus, was a poem written by Joseph Scriven in 1855. He sent it from Canada to his Mother in Ireland. In 1868, American Charles Converse, an attorney and composer of hymns, came across Scriven’s poem and set the words to music, publishing it in a hymnal. Set in the key of F, the melody is shared equally between parts. Each part is of equal difficulty, although Harp II makes F# in each verse. Dynamics are clearly marked.

One of Carolan's best known and loved tunes. This tune works very well on the harp. I played this at every event I ever played at. No matter how many times I have heard and played this, it still moves me. The arrangement was changed many times. The setting on the harp is the key of G, but the melody is only half at home in the key. The metronome speed is only an indication, but this tune should not be played too fast. .

One of the timeless classics by Ireland's most noted itinerant harper, Turlough O'Carolan, arranged for modern lever harp. O'Carolan was most known for this Planxties and musical portraits written for benefactors and people of importance in his life.  This one was titled after Tomas Muiris Jones, Squire at Moneyglass House in Co. Antrim. Carolan and Baron Arthur Dawson happened to be enjoying together with others the company of Squire Jones. Carolan was asked to compose a song in honor of their host and upon retiring to his apartment, took his harp with him where he composed the melody called Bumper Squire Jones, to honor and thank him for his hospitality.

Published by Luis Anjos Teixeira (A0.889431). Blind Mary was composed by O`Carolan, it is an irresistible enchanting little piece. In this file there are 3 versions for 3 different sizes of harps. One in F for a big harp, one in Eb for medium size and the one in F for a little 3 oct. lap harp a very similar one to the one that usually O`Carolan used to perform. The melodic bass played with the left hand demands a little bit of coordination but the arrangement is focused in the main melody and is very easy to perform in all this 3 versions. The piece is so beautiful that I recommend it to be played always twice in a row.  Some interpretation symbols are used as a performance suggestion. Most of the score is left to the interpretation of the artists involved, particularly the use of fingering. Feel Free to apply in this piece the Art and technic that expresses entirely your individual skills and taste. Have fun! The score was written on Finale. The sound file is the version in Eb for a medium size diatonic harp, it was produced with samplers from Garritan and conceived merely as an audio support for the presentation of the score.
