The Black Hounds are a nocturnal apparition, and their appearance was regarded as a portent of death. Perform this original work of Celtic Irish setting from her CD (Gypsy Road,2012) scored for harp ensemble of intermediate to advanced players.  Scored in E minor with no lever changes it features a creative slip-jig with lush and effective harmonies.  A rare opportunity to showcase programmatic skills for the harp ensemble.   The dark and mysterious musical message will touch the hearts of all who hear it.About the CompositionI wrote this when I was very angry at the world.  Someday I might meet a black hound on a dark night... and we’ll both go hunting together.Black Dogs,  Black Hounds, The Hounds of Hell,  Dogs of Hell,  Gabriel Hounds, Yell Hounds,  Barghest,  Black Dog of the Hanging Hills, Gurt Dog or the Hounds of Herne the Hunter… by whatever name, they are a common feature in the folklore of the British Isles.  The Black Hounds of Cŵn Annwn are the spectral hounds of Annwn, the otherworld of Welsh myth.  Early Christians came to dub these mythical creatures as The Hounds of Hell or Dogs of Hell and erroneously theorized they were therefore owned by Satan.  However, the Annwn of medieval Welsh tradition is an otherworldly paradise and not a hell or abode of dead souls. The Black Hounds are a nocturnal apparition, and their appearance was regarded as a portent of death. They are supposed to hunt on specific nights in the autumn and winter when it is believed that the howling of these huge dogs foretold death to anyone who heard them. *************************************************About the Composer Laura Olson (ASCAP) is a retired California music educator with over 30 years of experience specializing in stringed instruments and orchestras. She holds a B.A. in Music Education and M.A. in Irish Traditional Music Performance (fiddle, flute, and harp). Her experience as a symphonic musician, ethnic musician, and Film/TV composer led her to combining the three aspects of music into her own compositions and arrangements; storybook music in cinematic style. But soon, the deep notes rise, claiming sovereignty in turn and seizing the forces of nature. Peace tries to return, seeking to restore the harmonies of the beginning, but it falters, hesitant. I SEE STARS IN YOUR EYESA BEAUTIFUL, RHAPSODIC PIECE FOR SOLO HARP I See Stars in Your Eyes is a rhapsodic piece for solo harp (lever or pedal) with an improvisatory feel. The melody is flowing, the harmonies are elegant, and the mood is hauntingly tender. This five minute work makes for a great addition to the repertoire of either student or freelancer, and is perfect as a contrasting piece on a recital, atmosphere for a cocktail hour, or a casual serenade for family & friends. As a composer, a goal for Salazar is to create scores that help encourage classically trained musicians to improvise by writing cadenza-like improvisations into his pieces, making it so anyone at any level can improvise in performance. This approach lends to the most unique aspect of I See Stars in Your Eyes: the simple, easily performed improvisation section in the middle of the piece. Rather than imposing chord changes or fixed rhythm, this section has a written ostinato in the bass voice that is coupled with the freedom to improvise in the upper voice - allowing the performer to showcase their own musical voice.

For Solo Pedal Harp -- Composed in 2015 -- Approx. duration 7:45 --PROGRAM NOTES:Piece for Harp #1 begins abruptly with an invitation to the listener to take an inner journey into a potentially uncomfortable place. The discomfort dissipates into a more celebratory feel, which leads into the final contemplative mood to end. Compositionally, besides trying to challenge the performer, I am interested in exploring the counterpoint that results from overlapping patterns of different durations, as well as opposing rhythms within these patterns, which can be heard throughout the different sections. The final section of the piece introduces a 3rd contrapuntal layer, which further challenges the performer in that each voice is played on a different part of the string. (Harmonics on top, PDLT or close to the table in the middle, and sustained bass on the bottom.) In combination with the complex rhythmic and metric structure, this is probably the most difficult section, especially when trying to express a calm, contemplative soundscape.

Growing Toward the Light is a collection of pieces that Carol Wood began working on in a period of great sadness, when she and her husband discovered he was suffering from a kind of dementia similar to Alzheimer’s. Only a few of the thirteen pieces in the collection reflect the heartbreak and grief that followed, but, as Carol writes in her introduction, many musical friends encouraged her to try to keep playing and composing.
