About the CompositionI wrote this when I was very angry at the world.  Someday I might meet a black hound on a dark night... and we’ll both go hunting together.Black Dogs,  Black Hounds, The Hounds of Hell,  Dogs of Hell,  Gabriel Hounds, Yell Hounds,  Barghest,  Black Dog of the Hanging Hills, Gurt Dog or the Hounds of Herne the Hunter… by whatever name, they are a common feature in the folklore of the British Isles.  The Black Hounds of Cŵn Annwn are the spectral hounds of Annwn, the otherworld of Welsh myth.  Early Christians came to dub these mythical creatures as The Hounds of Hell or Dogs of Hell and erroneously theorized they were therefore owned by Satan.  However, the Annwn of medieval Welsh tradition is an otherworldly paradise and not a hell or abode of dead souls. The Black Hounds are a nocturnal apparition, and their appearance was regarded as a portent of death. They are supposed to hunt on specific nights in the autumn and winter when it is believed that the howling of these huge dogs foretold death to anyone who heard them. *************************************************About the Composer Laura Olson (ASCAP) is a retired California music educator with over 30 years of experience specializing in stringed instruments and orchestras. She holds a B.A. in Music Education and M.A. in Irish Traditional Music Performance (fiddle, flute, and harp). Her experience as a symphonic musician, ethnic musician, and Film/TV composer led her to combining the three aspects of music into her own compositions and arrangements; storybook music in cinematic style. Lever harp arrangement of this famous movement of Edvard Grieg's 'Peer Gynt Suite'.Arranged in 2023 for Eve Walls, then a grade 2 level lever harp player, who doesn't mind a few lever changes in order to play the music she desires. With just a little practice, these lever changes are doable for early level harp players as they relate directly to the well known melody played over them, with the hands operating close together, and the left hand part is left relatively free to make this possible.  Covering multiple ranges of the instrument, and with some nice soundboard slaps and glissando effects, this arrangement is designed to let the harp shine. Played with restrained excitement at the beginning and real gusto at the end, this can make a fun and exciting performance piece.

This is my simplified arrangement of Leaves from the Vine from the beloved animated series Avatar: the Last Airbender, as well as the more recent Netflix live-action adaptation by the same name. It is appropriate for beginner harpists working with an instrument as small as 24 strings, ranging from the F below middle C to the third F above Middle C (though the final verse of the song can be played an octave lower than written on smaller instruments). It is written in the key of B-flat Major with no accidentals or lever changes. As such, it could work on an instrument model without levers, so long as the instrument is tuned with Bs and Es flat. My own instrument is a Harpsicle Fullsicle Harp. But I believe it could also work, with few or no modifications, on a Harp-E, most/all of the Roosebeck Pakistani harp models, Dusty Strings Ravenna 26, or Musicmakers Sonnet 29. And, obviously, on any larger instrumentPlease note that this simplified version of the song for beginner harpists contains ONLY Leaves from the Vine and none of the medley themes in my more advanced version.I also, as mentioned, have a more complex arrangement of this piece, appropriate for intermediate harpists, published seperately.
