Many people are unaccustomed to hearing tunes based on modes other than the Ionian or Aeolian. Therefore, you may find some of the melodic contours or harmonies to be unusual, unexpected, or even uncomfortable. There are only three lever changes in this entire book – and they all occur on the last note of the piece. Guitar chords are included so that the melody may be played by any C instrument, accompanied by chords on harp, lute, guitar, or keyboard. Also, the transcribed harp part can be played on any keyboard instrument with only minoradjustments.Dynamics, fingering, and metronome markings are provided throughout as an aid to performance. However, the harper should use whatever dynamics, fingerings, and tempos suit them, no matter what this book indicates! The maximum range needed for each piece is only 26 strings (3.5 octaves) from low C to high G. Therefore, it can be played on a small harp encompassing that range. Simply treat the C two octaves below middle C as the lowest C on your harp and adjust the octaves accordingly. Ignore any 8va indications and shorten glissandos as needed.

This is an easy harp arrangement of Wake Me Up When September Comes by Green Day.  It features a simplified melody line for the right hand and broken chords in the left hand.  Chord symbols also included for improvisation.  Can be adapted for smaller harps - simply play in a different octave.  There is ONE lever change on the C minor chord.  You can flip the lever down on the E to get the E-flat if your harp is tuned in E-flat, then flip it back up in the next measure.  If you prefer not to flip levers, simply leave out the E in that chord entirely.  Harps with no levers? Just play a C and a G on that C minor chord, and leave out the E/E-flat.

It has several pedal changes but they can easily be achieved due to the slow performing tempo. It begins with a simple Scottish-sounding melody and then grows with a series of lush chords in the center of the song. Gorgeous!

An old Irish tune probably in praise of another Irish rebel Ruairí Óg Ó Mórdha (Rory O'More). This tune first appeared in one of Bunting's collections. It obviously existed a good while before then. This tune needs an F sharp and does not need lever changes. I have added fingering and dynamics which are optional, but I would highly recommend the 432 fingering on the repetitive notes. If you can get used to them in this tune, you can use them later in triplets in the faster tunes. .

A combined arrangement for harp trio of the American folk songs Shenandoah and Old Virginia (a reel whose melody is very similar to Flowers of Edinburgh). The melodies are each stated in solo versions in a medley and then combined in an overlay. The entire arrangement is in the key of C major with no accidentals. Harp 1 (advanced) plays the melody of Shenandoah in octaves along with other harmonic additions, also carrying the fast paced melody line of Old Virginia in a single solo line divided between the hands. Harp 2 (intermediate) plays the accompaniment for both tunes using various patterns of both triad and seventh chord harmony. Harp 3 (introductory) plays a harmonic reinforcement to Harp 2 in quarter, half, dotted half and whole note intervals. While Harp 3 is optional, it is still an important part of the arrangement. Enhanced by dynamics, triplets, and sixteenths, I Stand All Amazed builds to a wonderful conclusion - then as lovely as it starts, pulls back to a soft, flowing ending.

Programme Notes: Icarus Also Flew takes its title from the first line of the poem Failing and Flying by Jack Gilbert. He is referring to the classical myth of Daedalus and Icarus, an inventive father and son who bravely escape from their imprisonment in a tower by collecting the disposed feathers of seabirds, then fashion wings out of them and fly away. While the story is often treated as a morality tale--listen to your elders, don’t get cocky like the young man, Icarus, who, in such an understandable state of elation, ascended too close to the sun thus causing the wings to melt and his tumbling to his Mediterranean death--what Jack Gilbert reminds us is how regardless of one’s failure, the sheer transcendental experience of mortal flight remains glorious and unforgettable. Icarus’s fall was not into a legacy of disdain and oblivion, but in truth, he had come to the end of his triumph. This piece was the first of a series I composed during the Covid-19 quarantine conditions of 2020, to serve as potential contemporary preludes for each of Ludwig van Beethoven’s nine symphonies--his two hundred and fiftieth anniversary was this year!--though they can all stand on their own on any program. The connection, in this case, is with his celebrated fifth symphony in C minor--the Fate symphony, as it is commonly known. I’ll let the listener find their own connections.About the Composer:Benjamin Sajo (b. 1988) is a Canadian composer of contemporary classical music, as well as an educator. Since developing a fiercely independent creative voice upon the completion of his studies at Western (2010) and McGill Universities (2013), he continues to find inspiration from the intersection of mythology, art, and nature upon the contemporary human experience. In 2019, he released his premiere album of original music, The Great War Sextet: Canadian War Poetry with Trombone & Strings, with support from the Ontario Arts Council. He is a member of SOCAN and the League of Canadian Composers.
